i read this on liteswap.com saying that the usa govt is making all sales of HID conversions and lights illegal after 8/15/2003.

Please sign this Online Petition and help save the aftermarket HID industry.
It is our regret to inform you that as of August 15th, 2003, the sale and importation of aftermarket HID retrofit systems will most likely be altered significantly. The NHTSA/DOT has been trying to introduce new laws to regulate the sale of HID retrofit kits. Their guidelines on determining the legality of HID kits are antiquated at best and include filament locations. Because HID technology does not utilize a filament, they will always fail. No matter how high quality the kit is, they deem them as unfit for retrofit.

These regulatory changes and/or enforcement will effect ALL HID kit sales. On or about 8/15/2003, HID kits as you know it will never be sold again unless new laws or changes to existing regulations are made. I'm sure there are all types of legal issues here, but Liteswap.com will have to comply with whatever NHTSA decides. To our knowledge, after 8/15/03, there will be a possible $5,000 fine PER DAY for manufacturers selling HID kits. Therefore, since we cannot obtain inventory or new product from the manufacturer, we will have nothing to sell.

In light of these developments, Liteswap.com needs to move out ALL remaining inventory.

All HID kits are now on sale on our website. Prices listed already reflect the sale price. At this time, replacement parts and warranties are in question as well. Catz will be working hard to fight for the ability to sell replacement parts. It is also our belief that after 8/15, parts sold for warranty purposes will be allowed.

You will begin seeing a LOT of HID vendors out there selling kits to move inventory, but we still stress the importance of going with Liteswap/Catz. These capsules are of the highest quality and should last a VERY long time.

Thank you for your support of Liteswap.com and the aftermarket HID industry,
Liteswap.com Staff

This is absurd! I know that HID's are bright as hell and can blind the hell out of you if they are adjusted to the wrong angle, but honestly, 30 thousand complaints out of a population of 1.2 billion people in the last FIVE years. Come on folks, lets get real here. That's less than one thousandth of one percent of the population. By that number alone there is no precident for any form of legislation against HID headlights and retrofits to be created. Had those complaints been about causing electrical fires, or some sort of other health hazard aside from being bright I think would add a little more weight to the opposing side. But since that is no the case here, my position still stands that this is an outragous piece of legislation that must be stopped. I am gladly signing this petition.

This is crap. So now rich people can by bimmers/benz and be allowed to have HIDs but aftermarket tuners can't get them.

This is absurd. Once again we're stickin it to everyone except rich people who can buy the magical OEM HIDs that of course don't have any glare at all. What a load of shit.

This is pathetic! I signed it! I just bought some for my cars! It is unfair for them to stop us from having HIDs

I think it'll just mean they have to sell them saying 'for off road use' just like they do for the blue and other lights that are not technically legal.

I know for a fact that the OEM ones could be readjusted to be blinding ....just that most folks won't mess with them when they are factory..

oh well..

It will be interested to see what happens...

BTW: I think it is pretty silly to outlaw something that gives folks better visibility anyway.. Heck, the whole reason for all the new cars having the HID headlights is for better visibility..

BTW: many MANY cars have them now... even VW will have them as an option in their 2004 cars now....

...and many folks who bought cars with them as an option, buy them from the dealer afterwards as a retrofit...

I have them on my SC430 and they are super sweet... but I won't bother forking out the $1200 to convert my 911 either to Litronic headlights since I rarely drive it at night anyway..

I'm satisfied with my New Beetle lighting but if it was a factory option, I'd be all over it ;)
