View Full Version : DET swaps... so common.
Fraychild

I'm looking at things today... and I remember how they used to be way back when I first joined the Sr20 world... DET swaps are getting more common by the day.... So many people on here alone have done their swaps....
I know everyone on the board wishes they could have a DET in their G20's right now, but the number of those doing these swaps is rapidly growing as well....
Suddenly it's not about the HotShot CAI's or Headers anymore; It's not about the Cams and Advanced Timing anymore. People are just growing hungry for more "real" power. That 140-150 HP just doesn't cut it anymore; especially with the kind of "already mighty" cars that are being produced nowadays.
Pretty soon, it'll be out style as well... and people will start moving to the next best thing... The VE swaps.. which in a way are not so rare either... VE engines were claimed to be impossible to get ahold of, and now they're on the market for just a fraction over the DET's.
Thinking about it gets me depressed for some reason. It feels like we're constantly eating away the good ol' values because of the new ones and we strive to get the new ones out the way for even better things...
Where will all this go exactly? Let's say after the DE, DET, VE, VET era... what esle are we gonna shoot for?....
(sorry, just wanted to vent off for some reason...)

Must be a boring day at work today, huh Fray? :p
Anywho, I can live without 350whp. I prefer a comfy long distance cruiser than a rock hard bruiser. Not everyone wants a crapload of power, just a little more get up and go.....=)

im with you fray... its all about the plain old SR20DE, no T no V no nothing. ive always wanted to throw down the turbo in my car and make it as fast as possible but ive realized that 140 horse is plenty enough to do what i love best: cruise the hills and tackle the twisties!!! :knockout: i dont ever race anybody or care what my quarter mile is, and i get enough speeding tickets as it is so i dont feel the need for more power... but dont get me wrong i am definately all about modding the car a det just isnt for me, i just love my little G the way she is!!!
okay i lied i just dont have enough money or knowledge to install a turbo kit... i need some boost!!! :p j/k

This is exactly what I'm sayin. I love that my car DOESN'T tear up the road all day. For the same money I got this used G I coud have gotten a used I30, or a Mustang, or anything else... the reason I didn't, exactly what Evil said, I get speeding tickets as it is. Gas mileage is awsome, and lets face it, though we all talk about how slow these G's are stock, are they really? To me, no. But I've come from way slower cars... and I've never owned a faster car then this G, but I have driven them. sure, off the line, they're a little slow... but once I hit 3rd, I'm already at the speed limit, so do I really want something that got me to the speed limit a couple seconds faster, but burned a whole gallon of gas, not me... I like that I get to shift my car a few times off the light before I hit the speed limit... It's not the fastest car, but it is fun as hell... Oh, and Ainsley, I'm not tryin to take anything away from your awsome ride, I think it's way dope, and you know, I may even consider throwin a turbo on for shits n grins if it didn't cost as much as it does. I was more just stickin up for the DE itself... ;)

Yeah, I know, I'm sure my girl will want some goodies too once she's older... right now I couldn't do a swap anyway though, i couldn't let my self.. warranty n' all.. I still got 5 years 76,000 on my warranty to go, then it's on.. :D

for those of us not so sure about a swap and still crave more power like my self
maybe we will get into things a little more substantial than bolt-ons
like strocker kits, higher compression pistons, skimming the head to raise compression, porting & polishing
i would love to do all this
when i have enough money maybe ill give Mr. Miko a call:rolleyes:

What else is there to do? How about a sequential tranny? or try building a 300hp N/A with a backwards head like the BTTC car, there are plenty of things to do if you want to be unique.

Amen to that... but there "are" things you can do to a DE to boost it up, it's just that people nowadays don't find that enough... and as Justin pointed out: It'll cost way more than a turbo kit and still make less power ... :paranoid:

Wouldn't be too unique if you already know about it... but then again, it is not as common as a swap and it would be a good way to go.
As far as N/A power is concerned, it will always remain the backbone of things... now that's good ol' value to performance... I don't know how many of you feel, and I don't mean to offend anyone either, but I'm not the type that will EVER throw a bottle in my trunk for a "quick boost"... Call me Old Skool'... I just feel like bolt ons are loosing their values pretty fast, if they haven't already, because it's all about "boost"... and after boost, it'll be somethin' else.... Don't get me wrong, I have NOTHING against a Turbo'd motors... I love them them just as much whether it be a DE with a Turbo-Kit or a DET... but somehow, if I had the money and possibility, I'd like to own to SR20 powered vehicles... Have one with Turbo upgrades and the other with good old fashioned N/A upgrades....

bernie, you da man. i*m right there with you on the bottle issue... i feel it*s cheating. like if you*re gonna go forced induction, more power to you, but do it properly, don*t just do it so it*s a push of a button whenever you feel like it, i duno, i can*t explain it properly but i just really don*t respect spray... kinda the same way i feel about those manual-shift-automatics (triptronics, shifttronic, whatever you wanna call it) ugh i *HATE* that. what*s the purpose of driving a stick if you can*t even do it right?? it*s like, faaaaakestick. i can see at least if you*re rockin the full on automatic then hell yea, i drove automagic for two years, but if you*re gonna do something, go balls out or nothing. yeah so back to what i was sayin - the only way i would *ever* spray is if i had to get the turbo spooling at the line or something, and that would only be if i had a huge-ass turbo, which i don*t and probably won*t ever have either.

My G is NA right now, but I hope to boosting this summer and here's why: I know that if I wanted a faster car, I could get one. The problem is that I have not found a car that offers the same qualities as the G20. It's small and yet it's built like a luxury car. The ride and handling balance is perfect. The steering is telepathic. The styling is understated and classy. It's also cheap to repair (comparatively) and very durable. I've probably driven a couple hundred different cars at the various dealerships and brokerages I've worked at and none of them offers as complete a package as the G. The ONLY possible area for improvement is speed. I don't feel the need to run 11 second e.t.'s, but 140 hp just doesn't cut it anymore.
I guess it's a frame of reference thing, too. If the fastest car you've ever driven is a B12, then the G would seem fine. If you've driven a 911 Turbo, it feels like you're tied to a pole.
Anyways, that's my defense of DET's. I still have a ton of respect for all you NA guys, though.

JRudd i completely agree with you about the G. i*ve driven a TON of other cars, and just none of them feels as complete as the G. the G also fits me the best too (i*m 5'2" 105lbs) and usually i have a hard time feeling "comfortable" in other cars... bad blind sports, poor ergonomic setup and placement of, uh, stuff... i just think the G is a complete package, as you said. a rare diamond in the rough i suppose... the G is like the younger sister to some famous actress that gets overlooked because she*s not as flashy, but in all reality she*s 10x more awesome.

LOL! That's funny... I'd like to comment on what Justin said:
Seems like all good things become trendy at one point or another....
I dunno if I'd go so far as to say the Turbo Kits or DET swaps are trendy exactly... I mean, true, there's more and more on here, but you have to think of this as a unique meeting spot.. add all the members of G20.net, NICO & b15sentra that are true regulars etc.. we may have a total of 10,000 that are on here (between all the sites, and only counting regulars etc..). outta those, maybe what, I wouldn't even say 500 people have turbo (well, aftermarket turbo). Lotta NOS on the sites, but not actual turbo'd engines. So, lets say even 500 people have turbo, outta all the states, of all the country, that's only 50 aftermarket turbo'd sr20's per state, which even that seems a little high to me but, for arguments sake, definitely not trendy, do you think? Or do you guys think my numbers are way off, you think there's more? It just seems pretty rare to me still.. Off the top of my head I can only think of like 7 or 8 turbo'd G's on here... lotta projects going on though, but, as of right now, not a TON of G's are turbo'd really, least, not on this site anyways...

I thought I was the only one.......My G is completely stock (unfourtunately) but it feels just as fast as the Sentra did with the Intake,Exhaust,Timing,Plugs,etc....
I know thers much faster rides but Im pretty happy right now as is--I know it can only get better once the bolt ons come. I really amaze myself on the HGWY....I can hit the overdrive and Im at 110 in no time at all...

Yeah, I completely agree. Working for Acura I drive lots of different cars, and while all of them are nice in their own right none of them have quite the complete package the G20 has. And even next to all the flashy new TLs and MDXs customers still notice my car...more than one person has asked what the price is on it  . But the G20 is definately a hottie...:)

Same here. I've had a few passengers comment on how nice my car is. Some have even asked, "Is this a 98? 99?
And as for the power issue, a few mods(CAI, header, advanced timing) can easily resolve that issue.=) Beside 0-60 times and top speed means little to me.....although I wouldn't mind the VE under my hood.

I was pretty amazed too, as to how fast I got to 100 mph one day with the P11 ... It was a few days after I picked it up and I was going for a long drive and the Highway was all empty... maybe too empty... I didn't even realize it....
Why? Cuz' the car was SO quiet, and I was so used to NITI being noisy (exhaust etc) letting me know how fast I was going....
You see, as I mentioned before, I don't have anything against the DET, I do believe it's better than just "juicing"... but I just feel like it's becoming more and more common...
IT IS, we can't deny it, more and more people on here learn about it, and more and more people make it their "next thing on the list"... If anything, the sooner they could gather the money, the sooner they complete the swap... Then you have the VE... notice how the number (of interest alone) is slowly but surely growing?... I was so amazed to see that even Ebay had one of these motors for sale... and better yet... it had a "Buy It Now" option!! and the place had quite a few in stock... Crazy right?...
Wanna know my insight... I think I'd prefer squeezing the daylight out of a DE... meaning do all the possible "internal" upgrades... before you could move onto better things (DET or VE)... or ... add better things (T-kit) to it...
Internals: cams, pistons, port-polish, etc... Shoot, I remember reading about an SR21 (bored out of course) forgot what the company's name was)... things like that.... That's maxing out teh N/A power first... and then imagine you throw the T-manifold on it and do all the piping etc... basically, the motor is not just "All" Turbo powered... and doesn't just rely on "boost" but also can hold its own.... feel me?

I love my BOV, i love the fact that my family car scares the shit out of brand new V-8's. I love that i don't know anyone esle in my town with a DET'd G20. I love the fact when i get more money again i'm gonna have even worst traction problems. Don't get my wrong my JDM DE was fun but it has nothing on my DET. Aye, but beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. I mean, I hear ya guys, it's super dope that you guys did the swap, stoked for you, I really am, but I honestly am not jealous... I knew what I was gettin when I got this car. Like Fraychild, I moved from a P10 to the P11... when I was financing my P11, don't think I wasn't thinkin of other cars too... But, in the end, I had no doubts it was perfect for me... I mean, for the cash I financed this car, I could have gotten a 2000 1.8t Quattro, I could've gotten an I30, I could have gotten in a 97 328, a 95 Corvette, I could go on but, you get my point. I got the G for a specific reason, I like the car, like the handling, and I like that I DON'T get in trouble with the car. Reliable, nimble, put together well (not great, but well for sure) Am I moddin? Yeah, slowly and meticulously, I am, but nothing major. Once my warranty runs out, who knows, I might go big, but I can't really say. For right now, the car does me perfect, therefore, I can say, I'll stick with my DE over a DET, any day... :D :) =)

Really? I'd wouldn't mind meeting some other FWD det guys, that would be amazing. I know all to many 240sx owners. The VE works good for you becuase you would rather road race, while i enjoy straight line driving for now. Once i get my car modded for both i might just have to hit up a road race event or two and try my driving at that.

I know of a few DET'd G20's out in NY... and, most importantly, I know of MANY other cars with DET's in them... Sentras, 240's, NX2000's and 200sx's... BTW, even an Altima...
Which is what I started the thread about... I wasn't talking about "G20's" only as being "DET-common"... but the idea of swapping that motor in any FWD or RWD vehicle that could take the motor...
