Nissan in huge car recall

The recall will cost Nissan about $140m
Japanese car manufacturer Nissan is recalling more than 2.5 million cars worldwide, because of an engine defect.
The safety recall affects the Primera, X-Trail, Almera and Almera Tino models, built since 1998.

It follows reports of engines stalling and then failing to re-start. The fault has been traced to defective sensors in the engine management system, which will be replaced free of charge.

The recall - the largest in Nissan's 70-year history - includes more than 100,000 cars sold in the UK.

No accidents

Nissan said the recall would cost it 15bn-16bn yen ($139m-148m; £81m-87m).

It said there had been no reports of any accidents or injuries as a result of the fault.

NISSANS RECALLED
Japan 1.02 million
US 700,000
UK 108,000
Germany 84,000
A Nissan spokesman said the company would contact owners of Primera, X-Trail, Almera and Almera Tino cars by the end of November.

He said the fault was relatively minor and could be rectified in less than an hour.

"To issue a recall is never good news but it is important, now we have identified the problem, to get the cars in," the spokesman said.

Nissan is Japan's third biggest car maker and is 44%-owned by France's Renault.

Earlier this year it reported operating profits of 737bn yen for the past financial year.

the defect part is the rpm sensor which monitors and controls the engine's fuel and timing.

the root cause is soldering deformation due to heat from the engine causing a short circuit.

The short circuit will cause the engine to shut down while driving or will prevent the engine from starting.

Makes sense as far as what the problem is... That's understandable... It sucks though that such a minor issue can cause such a big problem... and I'm talking about from the cars not being able to re-start to recalling millions of vehicles worldwide... But hey, it may be a huge blow... but I'm sure Nissan will get through it.... I hope ... :nervous:

They will get though it, this is extremely minor. Its not like a Ford recall bacasue the cars are contsantly ready to blow up and catch on fire or anything. If its only going to cost 150 million to fix 2.5 million cars, it is just a stupid little $60 electronic sensor.

The fault is due to faulty crank and cam sensors on the QG engines. In the UK, they have already been done over the past year or so, but now it looks like they have to be done again due to the same problem, so theyve made it known worldwide.
