: Paint Defect!

I had my front bumper cover replaced about 8 months ago due to a minor incident. Now I find that the paint is disintegrating like hell! Whoever painted this bumper did a really crappy job. I don't know about you, but I don't think 8 month old paint should look like this:

What should I do about this? I've kept this paint clean, washed and waxed ever since I got the work done, so there's been no neglect of the paint. It just fell apart, and I'm pissed as hell about it.

Looks like a cheap paint job to me. Take it back to the place that painted it and ask for a refund.

That's what I'm thinking...they should pay for a repaint...

I could understand a few rock chips-that's normal. This, however, is simply a crappy paint job that's falling apart.

And they better not come back with some crappy-ass knee-jerk response about the frigid weather and salt on the road causing the abnormally premature peeling.

They better not. Hell, I have the car washed within a week of heavy salt use without fail. I'm going to call them tomorrow. And I don't want them to redo it-they sucked the first time, they'll probably suck the second time.

Definatly call them and bite someones ear off. I had a similar problem once, luckily my friend owns a body shop so it was taken care of. FYI: they might ask you when was the first time you waxed your car after the repaint. Tell them it was AFTER 3 months. As a rule of thumb your not suposed to wax/polish the paint untill it is completly dry and that can take up to 3 months. In some case it can cause paint damage. If they don't ask you then dont worry. To me it just looks like the shot black paint over the bumper. Good luck!

It was replaced during the winter so I couldn't even wax it for a few months after I got it done now that I think about it...(seriously).

Cool, just making sure becuase I know there are some crazy people who like to wash and wax in 13 degree weather.

Yeah, I would if I could get water out of my hose in that weather, but I'm not quite that nuts.

I had a look all around the bumper cover this morning, and the paint is starting to come off on the other side as well! I'm calling the place that did it during lunch today. They're either giving me a repaint or a refund (preferably refund so I can take it somewhere else to be done).

Painting flexible parts on cars requires a flex agent to be added to the paint among other things to make it stick. It looks like someone missed a step in the process or was just in a hurry. Take it back. They're going to have to strip the whole thing off and start over now. If the body shop does it right, they will remove the bumper cover, paint it the right way and then bake it in an oven so that when you get it back, you don't have to worry about the paint curring or anything.

I'm taking it to the place that did it to have it looked at this afternoon....wish me luck.

Good luck!

Any reputable body/paint shop should honor a repaint/fix.

I had that happen once to a panel I had repainted at the same place I've been going to for years..

They apologized profusely and redid it right away... AND the next time I went in they gave me a discount!

Mistakes happen, but the reputable people fix their mistakes.

It looks like the paint prep wasn't done right.. or maybe the temp wasn't right on application.. or they didn't use the right flex agent in the paint..

who knows, but that simply is NOT normal!

Good luck! Find out if they remove the bumper cover when they repaint it. It's the only way to do it right so that you don't have "dead" areas of paint. A dead area is when they leave the bumper on the car and can't get a good angle on it with a spray gun. Paint comes out grainy looking.

Thanks. I talked to them, showed them the paint, and they agreed immediately to a repaint. And they're definately going to remove the bumper-I'll specifically tell them to do it. Thanks for reminding me to do that.
