Starter on the 96 was grinding and not engaging. It would get progressively worse as time went on. Figured it was time for a replacement since I read the SR20's are prone to starter failure as they age. Besides that it's the little woman's car and I don't want it to strand her---even though I told her that it can be push started. =) She didn't think it was funny.
Our family mechanic told me $142.50 for the starter and $65 for labor, didn't have the time to replace it myself and for $65 it saves me lots of frustration.... Gosh, I'm getting old.
Anyway, just wanted to post this because I read other posts where folks are paying $400 and $500 for a starter and labor. My goodness!!!

I recently replaced mine for $200 parts and $60 labor. So you got a pretty good deal.
I agree the starter on our car looks very hard to replace for a mechanic of my (poor) caliber. My brother and I looked at it with an FSM and couldn't even see where the starter was, much less reach it.:cheeky:

So did I, but it didn't go over well with her. Besides that, if that car ever failed to start I'd never hear the end of it and have to get her a G35.....

I consider myself mechanically inclined, always do the maintenance myself. Recently did the header on my G, (BTW -hassle). Have assisted with clutches, done water pumps, axles, and engine rebuilds in my younger years. So when I popped open the hood and tried to look for the starter (heard it is under the intake by the tranny)....after about two minutes of back and forth, I said f*** it. Not worth my trouble.
Now I know why my father says "take it to the mechanic". He use to always work on cars when he was younger, now he will only do an oil change...nothing else. I'm starting to feel the same way as I get older..... can't be bothered with anything that is a hassle. ;)
