just a thought.....if the posting of these raffles give advantage to the people in the east coast, i feel the west coast sponsors are losing out. maybe there should be a scheduled time on when these raffles are posted so every sponsor will have a chance at it?

It's not really the amount of hours I'm talking about. If the actual thread is posted at 9:00am EST, the people on the west coast would have to wake up at 6 in the morning to purchase the raffle tickets. After posting my first reply, I realized the thread had been posted at around 9:00 PST.

I have posted both of the raffles so far and Im on the west coast. I dont get in to work til 8:30 (when Im on time) and its usually at LEAST an hour after that so there isnt any advantage for a specific coast. ;)

I do agree tho that we should set a specific time to post the raffles. Ill talk with Pat and we'll figure something out. As I said, we didnt expect the tickets to sell the way we did or we would have thought about this sooner.

You know this is a tough one, not everyone has access at all times, so no matter when we post the raffle, there are those that are gonna be in school, on the road, at work, at home, etc..etc... Id have to agree with D, it really dosent matter when its posted.

I think the only thing to make it totally fair is to send out PM's to all the sponsors letting them know what time the raffle will be posted, then you guys can fight for it at that time. So your either online or not but you were advised.

Question: Maybe i'm not totally very experienced with the whole raffle deal, but i don't see the concept of limiting the number of tickets. If we're trying to raise money for G20.net here, why not give people more time? Is it to entice people into buying them quickly, and thus you'll be able to sell them quickly?

Just wondering...kinda confused...

Well, I can understand the point about odds. Unfortunately it didn't work in this case, seeing as how the odds were spread amongst only four people. Limiting the number of tickets is a good idea, I say take it further and limit the number of tickets one person can purchase. After all, if you're going to put a cap on the total number of tickets available, why not give a broader spectrum of people the chance to get in on the raffle? You'll still raise the same amount of funds, and the odds will be greater.

I know, you're still working the kinks out. Just offering my 2 cents of suggestions..hehe.

trbobrk
Apr 29, 04, 08:42 PM
I think one reason for the purpose of a limited number of tickets is it gives perks to sponsors. To encourage sponsorship, the sponsors should get some real perks; simply telling the sponsors the raffle is coming isn't a perk. Neither is letting them buy tickets ahead of time it there is an unlimited amount and everyone has an equal chance. Something to consider would be having a raffle with unlimited tickers, but the sponsors buy tickets before the regular people at a discounted rate so they get more chances per dollar.

As for the odds, not everyone has an equal chance. People with more money to blow have higher odds of winning. Technically even with unlimited tickets someone could buy the raffle buy getting a whole bunch of tickets.

Something I've never understood was the the lotto. Why don't millionares play lotto. Casue if there is 14 million different combinations and you get 2 combinations for $1, spending 7 million on tickets would guarentee they win the jackpot as well as a whole bunch of partial winners. I added it up once, even if you bought every ticket but the jackpot you would still win about 5 million from the partial tickets. So when the jackpot is up around 20mil you could buy 7million in tickets, win on every combination, make 5 million on the partials, take the half now on the jackpot which would be 10 million which would give you 15million - the 7 you 'invested' and - 40% of the 8 million net for income tax on gamblings = A real quick way of making 4.8 million after taxes.

dude that is sick, how did it take u to come up with that shit.

here is what i was thinkin... lets say we were gonna to raffle this car again.

set a limit, 200
150 for the sponsers, 50 for the non sponsers.

now, for all sponsers to get a fair shot, notify them 48 hours in advance, then post it for the sponsers only till the tickets run out. then do the same for the non sponser.

Your math is way off, this would be true if the numbers were 0-9, but there are usually 50(?) intergers per slot, so elminating one interger per slot as each slot fills and given the *powerball* slot has its own 50 intergers, the right number of combinations is almost an exponential factor of the number of intergers available in relation to the slots they take up, here is an example of a 6 number lotter drawing, with a *powerball* slot.

50*49*48*47*46*50=12,712,560,000

IIRC, thats the total combination of number possiblities in a 6 number lottery. Not very good at all, over 12 Billion to one. Thats why millionares dont play, they cant afford it.

hey nice... but he could be talkin about the Numbers game.

here is mass is there something call the numbers game.

only 4 numbers. 1-9

but u gotta be exact order in numbers to win. can u tell me the odds of that? or atleast teach me how to do it so it will be less work for u?

ie: 4-1-2-9

If all the numbers are in one pot being drawn for, then the odds are 9999 to 1

If each slot can be filled by a number 0-9 then the odds of getting all four numbers correct are

10*10*10*10=10,000 to 1

Now the odds of getting those four numbers in the right sequence is beyond my knowledge....Im sure its an exponential factor of 10,000 or something crazy like that.

I was using the WA State Lotto. 6 balls drawn from 01-49
If your list of balls matches the 6 balls drawn, you win. It does not matter which order the balls are chosen, or are listed on the ticket (although they put them in order on the tickets, and newspaper reports of results)

To find the probablity of the drawing like this, you need to find the number of non-repeatable combinations

You were calculating permutations where the results 123, 132, 231, 213, 312, 321, are each unique, where as the WA state lotto would all be the same since they contain the same numbers 1, 2, and 3. Obviously with 49 balls, there would be a lot of repeating combos if you use permutations. Actualy there would be 49! (and that isn't and exclamation point but symbol for factorial)

C(6,49) = 13,983,816 but since you get two trys for a $1, the odds of winning, or number of tickets needed to have all the combinations would be half that; $6,991,908

Unfortunatly, the lotto game here has changed since the last time I figured it out two years ago, and the new payouts schedule sucks, also the jackpots aren't as high as they used to be.

So you buy $6,991,908 tickets

258 would get $1000 = $258,000
13,550 would get $30 = $406,500
249,711 would get $3 = $749,133

So all the winning tickets except the jackpot = $1,413,633

1 of them would get you the jackpot

Jackpots and Income from playing
12 million = 1/2 now + 1,413,633 = 7,413,633 - 6,991,908 = $421,725
13 million = 1/2 now + 1,413,633 = 7,913,633 - 6,991,908 = $921,725
14 million = 1/2 now + 1,413,633 = 8,413,633 - 6,991,908 = $1,421,725
15 million = 1/2 now + 1,413,633 = 8,913,633 - 6,991,908 = $1,921,725
16 million = 1/2 now + 1,413,633 = 9,413,633 - 6,991,908 = $2,421,725
17 million = 1/2 now + 1,413,633 = 9,913,633 - 6,991,908 = $2,921,725
18 million = 1/2 now + 1,413,633 = 10,413,633 - 6,991,908 = $3,421,725
19 million = 1/2 now + 1,413,633 = 10,913,633 - 6,991,908 = $3,921,725
20 million = 1/2 now + 1,413,633 = 11,413,633 - 6,991,908 = $4,421,725
...
25 million = 1/2 now + 1,413,633 = 13,913,633 - 6,991,908 = $6,921,725
...
30 million = 1/2 now + 1,413,633 = 16,413,633 - 6,991,908 = $9,421,725

And that will definatly put you in the highest tax bracket which for individuals is $90,515 + 35% of the amount over $311,950

You can figure out after tax income if ya want.

I looked up the MA numbers game. Looks like permutations with repeating number.

Odds are 1:10,000 4 numbers, 0-9 repeatable number, and the order matters.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. Me & pat have really been trying to get a good plan for these raffles so keep the ideas coming.

MrFancypants
Apr 30, 04, 11:11 AM
Looks like the trbobk remembers his Finite Mathematics :)

Most lotteries dont care about the order of the numbers so the odds of winning are better. Pat's example of 1:10,000 was an exact match (correct order) of 4 numbers 0-9. Kind of like a combination lock (misuse of the word 'combination', really!).

PowerBall is a little more confusing because 5 numbers can be in any order but the 6th has to be the right ball. Also there are more numbers for white balls (53) than the Powerball (42). To win the whole shabang would be C(5,53) x 42. That comes to 42 x (53!48!)/5! or 1:120,526,770.

Now you might say, "Why dont I just buy all 120 million number combinations and win for sure?". Well if you could actually do that (I pity the guy at Circle K having to print all that up!), some lucky bastard would probably get the same numbers on one lucky ticket, you'd have to split the prize money with him, and then you'd be in the hole!

Regardless, the odds of winning this toy car were 1:30 for each ticket. I bought 10 so I had a 33% chance of winning, but that obviously didnt do me much good now did it?

In the future I would recommend a cap of how many tickets each person could buy. That would keep it fair so more people could participate.

Damn greg, thanks for point that out, i might to drug every F8cker so that i would be the only one buyin the ticket. ehehe

i think im just gonna stick with my number

0-6-1-4 and all the possible order of it. which is 16 tickets i think.

i bought one, 1/30 which was a pretty bad odd, but i would have laugh if i won. hehe

mainly because of the odds D. if i was to be the first one to buy a ticket, and found out 300 more tickets were sold, i would have to buy more to have a better chance of winning.

the 1/30 odd i liked so thatz the only reason why i would buy the ticket, seeing how i am a poor Gless person right now.

I probably wouldn't have bought $20 worth. Seeing how the Toy is worth ~ $42 I probably wouldn't spend 1/2 the toys value unless my odds of winning were really good.
