Well for those who don't know yet... we bent some valves on my DE engine while trying to install my S3 cams S3 Install gone bad (http://www.g20.net/forum/showthread.php?t=37455&highlight=install+bad). So I figured that since im going to be putting in a new Sr20, and DET is too rich for my blood, why not a VE?

Pretty much, my car has been dead since July 18th, and i have been too busy with work and school to even work on my car... my poor baby's got like 1/4 inch of dust on her... :surprised . Anyways, today was the first day that we're actually starting to wench away! Only after 2 months! Due to my tight schedule, me and Jorge (SuperblkStalion) can only put ~ 5-10 hrs a week into the swap. Yeah its gonna take a little bit to get her running, but it will get done!

Any suggestions on my VE swap? As of now, i plan on running her on DE injectors, and a DE ECU, and a DE wiring harness. The VE ECU will come around Xmas time. So this is only temporary. She will have a cai, header, remus muffler (primera), and a Mossy water pump pulley. I still haven't decided upon what i am going to use to activate my cams. There are several out there, but i dunno which one i should go for.

Day 1

Today was the first day we started working on the car. We got all the fluids drained, removed radiator, intake, headers, and disconnected a lot of plugs. We started working on taking off the axels but didn't get finished today. All that is left is pretty much the A/c compressor, motor mounts, and disconnecting the tranny. Other than that, the engine should be out next week.

Sorry guys, I forgot to bring my camera. But ill make it up with more pictures the next time we work on it!

tell me about it! My quote was 2.5k-4k for stock boost...... sucks.. Plus there is no end to a DET! it can be as big as your wallet, and THEN some.

I'm buying it from a friend for $1,100 for the VE, engine only. Im selling my S3's soon, so i would only pay ~$800 for VE ;) No worries guys. We're scheduled to work on the car tomorrow (thursday) so ill give you plenty of pictures for your viewing pleasure. :)

It wouldnt work because theres no egr equipment. Smoggers dont care if it looks the same if theres no egr and an engine code number that doesnt match up with the car.

Its mainly the EGR thats missing from it visually. Passing emmissions is no prob because the VE burns clean. As for the engine code.... i've never seen/had a smogger check for the engine code yet.. :eh:

Sep 25, 05, 01:29 PM
In the USA the state of California its pretty much, if you don't have stock engine in your car, they fail you and you cant register the car to drive. Only way around it is to buy 'CARB' approved mods that you have to show them the emblems for or they fail you that way also..

n00b question;

most states have emissions not just california. He didnt really explain what emissions testing is exactly. But the main point of it is to make sure cars arent producing more than a set amount of pollutants but testing the cars on a dyno and measuring the amounts of certain chemicals coming out of the exhuast. Other parts of the testing are checking of safety items on the car to make sure it operates properly like testing turn signals, reverse lights, tire wear, etc.

The only part that doesnt really make any sense is the part of the visual check. I can understand them looking to see if EGR(which is for emissions) is connected but it shouldnt matter what engine is in the car as long as it passes the dyno testing. Although I do believe it is legal to have an engine of the same manufacturer as long as it is the same year or newer. But the reason most people fail is because of the lack of EGR.

Seriously i really really wanted a Fidanza..... But im more concerted about getting this baby up and going 1st. Imma go with a Fidanza when i get a new clutch. For now im just gonna resurface it and use the stock flywheel. The clutch is only 500 miles old~ So that means is nice and broken in so it can handle my VE's powwwwa!

Day 4

Well the engine is in! We bolted her up along with the filled motor mounts, and that baby is solid. Now we're just pluggin in all the harnesses and such. I also put in my Pacesetter short shifter, along with the ES bushing. All i need to say is that it feels great, and i will never drive another G without it.

We could of had the engine running at least by today but we had some minor problems.
1) Reccomended by Justin, i put in a Stanza WP pulley to replace my VE pulley. The pulley is bigger than the VE pulley itself, almost an inch bigger in diameter when compared to a stock DE pulley, but only a hair smaller than the N1. But for $27.00, im not complaining at all. The problem was that the stock belt for the WP could not accomidate for the bigger Stanze pulley, so im off to Napa to get a new one tomorrow. No biggie.

2) Obviously there are some extra plugs that are laying around because the VE doesn't use some sensors that the DE has. So we're trying to get it all straightened out.

Other than the extra plugs that we need to figure out where they go, we got the hard parts already taken care of. The engine should at LEAST be running by our next working day (thursday). Wish me luck that everything runs ok!

Same reason why people get UP pulleys/ N1 pulleys for the VE. The bigger the better. Less cavation.

Well today we we reattached all the harnesses except for 2 of them. No pics yet guys, Still waiting for the server to approve my pics -_-''

Engine should of been ready to go except for 2 minor problems.

1) I can't figure out which 2 plugs are left over. Im sure one of them is for the EGR temp, but dunno the other. Its light blue and it sits right by the coolant temp sensor.

2) It seems like for the VE i have an extra place for the coolant hose go to? I've connected collant hose to where its supose to go, but i have this extra one right by the cooland temp sensor and i dunno where it goes...

A larger pulley will drive the WP slower and eliminate cavitation at high RPM.

Water pump pulleys: DE < VE < Stanza < N1 (VE)

Update

Axels are on, and i took her for a drive. She drives nice, but rough. Finally i got my CEL's. Here they are:

1) 105 - EGR and canister control valve

2) 25 - Idle speed control valve circuit is open or shorted

3) 65 - 65 Misfire detected - cylinder no. 4

4) 35 - Exhaust gas temperature sensor (California models)

ICAV, and my misfire in cylinder #4. When she runs, she studders a bit. When i rev her a lil, i hear a *puh* out of the exhaust, not backfire... but just a *puhh* sound. I was supecting that it was a misfire. She needs me to give her gas to start and she runs a bit rough even after she's warmed up. I also got a flahing CEL (sign of misfire) while i was driving. So ill go get all that checked out.

you use the larger pully to prevent water pump from cavitation at high RPM's, doesnt hurt the motor.

Conclusion of my SR20VE swap

Overall the swap really is not that bad. Just take your time on it. This was me and Jorge's 1st engine swap and we got her done right. Again, just make sure to take your time. The SR0VE is pretty much a direct swap. Make sure you transfer all sensors from your DE to the VE, other than that everything was just plug and play. I also filled my motor mounts with Urethane with 80 shore. It already vibrates my car quite a bit. Feels like your engine is running a little rough during idle, but motor is solid and does not move. You can try 94 shore if you want something even harder, but more vibrations. As for tools, just make sure you have a complete set of sockets/wrenches, and plenty of extensions. What me and jorge did not do was labeling all of the harnesses that we disconnected. It will be easier for you to reconnect the harness later on if you label them. Honestly, its not that hard at all, It took us about 10 mins to find out where all the plugs go. Also, for my p10, I had 2 plugs left over from the EGR that the VE doesn't use. Just plug in 70 omh resistors to it, or if you are sending in your ECU to JWT to put the resistors in the ECU so you will no longer throw any more CEL's

Also, for those who are interested about the Stanza pulley, it fits any SR20DE engine. Just get a bigger belt. I got it for about $33 shipped from Justin @ EverythingG20.com

Problems I’ve encountered
1) The location the coolant lines. It was different from my DE. The VE uses sizes 3/4'' and 5/8'' coolant lines. The 3/4'' go thru the firewall to the heater core for the A/C. Unlike the DE, you need to take off the top pre-shaped 3/4'' hose, and go buy another 3/4'' hose that is about 6 inches in length to connect to the VE. The 5/8'' nipples go to the throttle body. If you’re using a DE throttle body like I am, the 5/8'' hose will be a too big for the throttle body. What I did was just clamp them down really tight, or find some adaptors at your local hardware store to change the 5/8'' to a smaller size.

2) If you are going to get the bigger Stanza water pump pulley, make sure you get a bigger belt. You will need one that is 9/16'' x 35-3/8'' in size. I got mines at Napa, Part # 040347

3) Make sure you grind down your distributor if you are planning to use a DE one or else it won't fit.

4) If you are having a real hard time taking out the driver side axel, disconnect the CV clamp, and just remove the axle with connection still in the tranny. Yeah it sounds funny but hear me out. I was hammering away for 30 mins and i would not get the damn axel out of the tranny! I ended up hammering off the CV clamp by accident and the axel kinda just dropped out, and got grease all over the floor, but the connecting part is still the tranny. All you need is to buy a new CV clamp, and some CV grease when putting the axel back in. *note* If you are going to do this, be prepared for the grease to splatter all over the floor if your not careful.

5) My VE had no connection harness (pig tails) for my VE solinoids. After talking to Andreas Miko, he told me that the solinoids have 2 different sized connections, and that we can use two specific connectors from any DE. ONLY if you use a file, and slowly file away the "keys" inside the connector to allow it to fit solinoids. 1) Any injector connector will fit one of the solinoids (easy to get), 2) the conneting harness from the that connects to the ARV on the back of the engine, under the intake manifold (a little harder to get). Pic borrowed from CarloSR (http://www.g20.net/gallery/data/511/1561ARV.JPG)

Hey Martin. There are tons of Bluebirds (Stanzas) here in the scrapyards..=)

Did you have to do any grinding for clearance to fit the pulley on the VE ?? Did you try it on the DE at all ??

I actually haf to do some very VERY minor grinding. Which was enlarging the whole of the pulley so i can mount i ton my WP. I talked to justin and it was supose to be a perfect fit. I just had to enlarge it VERY little. I think it was just the pulley i got, all the others work fine from what ive been told. As for the DE, it works just the same. I had not fitment problems on that at all. I like the stanza pulley becaue its bigger than the VE, and UR pulley, but just a hair smaller than the N1. DE<UR<VE<N1. Good luck on the find!

Thanks for that Martin. I'd read some threads on SR20Forum where it was mentioned that the front cover needed grinding for clearance.

That pulley is used on a few cars here in the UK between '86 and '90 ;) (Bluebirds....T12, T72, U11. Sunnys....B12, N13).

Yeah, i put the pulley on my DE just to test things out with no problems at all. Just make sure your getting the correct stanza pulley. I dunno what year it is, but you can refrence it with the part # in my previous posts. :)

I have the measurements for the belt that you would want to use for your car. I posted that on my earlier posts too. That should be a good start as for looking for a belt. :)

I may be up for a swap, Does the VE have the plugs for the Oil Pressue Guage or can i take the Oil Filter holder thingie over to the ve

It should come with the oilfilter-housing..anything else would be strange I think. What you probably need to move over (as far as I know at least) is alternator, powersteering, a/c, distributor (maybe?)...I think that's basically it, but other things are interchangeable. I think you can use the DE throttle body, but I dont know any pro's og con's for that.
Gimme a couple of weeks, and I can give you more first-hand info about doing a euro-install :P

the problem is with most DE engines us the dont have the plug for the oil pressue guage, i had to swap the housing from the egt to the gsx engine for it to work.

Aaah, like that. Well..I dont know really. All have the plug for the oil pressure warning light though, but I dont know anything about the gauge. Only the SRi models came with that up here I think, not the eGT's, and I think it was only P10 too.
I've bought a separate gauge though, to monitor things.
But if I understand you correctly you are talking about the sensor, right? I would guess the threads and everything is the same, just that the sensor for the OE oil-pressure gauge is a different part number. And maybe a different kind of connector?

And if you mean that the oilfilter-housing has two holes, one for the pressure warning light, and one for the gauge, you could always buy a splitter (dont know what they are really called).
Maybe this is something you could use?

I've ordered some things from there now. Cant say anything since I dont have first hand experience, but they seem to be good after what I've read around.

it is only the eGT's thatb have the oil pressue guage, The only problem is finding a VE engine in the UK,

I might perhaps get a P11-144 and do it with that.
