Hello all..

Well I finally got around to doing my VE install today (into my P10). BIG THANKS to Cavern, JustinP10, Bishous-G and Cesarin_se-r for hanging out and helping me with the install!! They were a GREAT help and of course made doing the swap more fun.

Of course ALL the new parts for my install were sourced at Scottsdale Infiniti via Justin, Cesar drove all the way from LA to hang out with us and take pics during the install (and go drinking with Bish and Cavern).. :)

I caused a little issue right out of the gate.. while installing the rear main seal, I started to remove the plate that it's mounted into (WRONG MOVE!). I had to pull the lower and upper oil pans to get that plate off, and then reseal it with RTV... I had a feeling this is what I would have to do but wasn't sure if there was a short cut (that wouldn't require me having to remove and reinstall the lower pans). After chatting with P10det and then GT20iR, they both let me know I WAS going to have to pull the lower and upper pans. (Thanks to Charles and Mike for the inputs!)

While I was doing this work, the guys started to prep the P10 for the motor to be dropped. I got the pans off then got the rear main seal plate on, cleaned the surfaces all up.. and then got the pans back on again and the new rear main seal installed. I was then able to go and work with the guys on the motor/tranny drop.

The motor/tranny is on the ground and the VE is on the engine stand (rotated upside down so the RTV can cure with out any oil in it).

Tomorrow morning we'll be moving some of the parts from the DE over to the VE and put it in the car.

When we finish, the 96' P10 with have a SR20VE with MSD cam switching unit, Nismo AFPR, SSAC 2.5" header, 2.5" VRS cat back, AEM CAI, UR water pump and power steering pulleys.

I'll be running the stock DE ODB II ECU and MAF, but will be using the VE stock injectors.

I have a Max E60 MAF on the shelf, but won't be installing it in the car until I get the Calum ecu. We also have access to a wideband O2 sensor, but we'll be putting it in Cavern's car first to do some tuning. We're planning to do most of the tuning on his car first..then once we have a good ecu map that's dyno tuned on his car.. then I'll run the same setup (will end up costing us both less $)..

Anyway, I'll post some pics and more progress tomorrow.

Day 3 (what there was of it)..

I installed my new vaccum lines and the charcol canister solenoid. I don't have pics of that as of yet.

Here are the pics of the AEM I installed today:

The battery tray relocation brackets and the old CAI hole:

The AEM CAI and everything else except the battery, belts and fluids installed:
http://gallery.mylangka.com/main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=22449&g2_serialNumber=2

Ok, so I was missing a few items to finish the swap.. and I took time out to watch the F1 race I had recorded (time I should have spent driving to get the parts I needed..)

A few things I learned from this install so far:

1. Even if your wife says "it's ok, go ahead and do your big car project that you had planned..even though we have ALOT of family visting from out of town."... reconsider it. Today I needed to go get parts to finish the car, and I didn't get to the parts store til 9pm (got in just before they closed).

2. I'm picky! I routed and then re-routed the vaccum lines for the canister to the solenoid, because I just wasn't happy with it. I also had to re-route the ground cable and a few other cables due to fitment issues, or possible issues with the clutch.

3. It's a good thing I took some days off, so I've been able to relax during this install.

I really am happy with the way the car has turned out. I just need a set of belts (after I figure out the size?), and put fluids in and we'll see if it starts. :nervous:

--------------------------------------------------------
Day 4:

As you call can see by now I've been taking my time on this install (and working in the evenings the last few days).

Shigspeed Scottie.. here are the pics you asked me about (of the carbon canister solenoid, and where I mounted it):
http://gallery.mylangka.com/main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=22766&g2_serialNumber=1

You can see the two vacuum lines going into it in this pic:
http://gallery.mylangka.com/main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=22773&g2_serialNumber=1

And a final shot.. (I still need to remove the funnel just on the other side of the radiator, and make a custom bracket for the cruise/throttle cable:
http://gallery.mylangka.com/main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=22782&g2_serialNumber=1

The car runs very smoothly, and fired on my crank. I will connect up the MSD cam switch tomorrow and take it for a drive.

Ok.. the condensor is fixed and installed.. pix below:
http://gallery.mylangka.com/main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=25310&g2_serialNumber=1
http://gallery.mylangka.com/main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=25312&g2_serialNumber=1

All I need at this point are a few orings... and to get the A/C system evacuated.. and I'm ready to put R134 in it and be down the road.

I removed the alternator and found that 1/2 of the connector was stuck in the alternator. I then proceeded to swap over a good connector from a spare wiring harness I had laying around. Here is the old and fixed connectors:

http://gallery.mylangka.com/main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=25324&g2_serialNumber=1

Thanks to Cavern for driving over and looking at his alternator plug, to help me figure out which wire went where in the connector.

I put the old alternator back in.. and I'm having no charging issues.

I figured out my wiring issue with MSD unit and hooked it up, then took the car for a drive tonight.. is all I have to say!!!!!

For those of you that haven't driven a VE equip'd car.. you NEED TOO! Damn!! The car runs very smooth.. sounds cool, pulls GREAT..

I still have some tidying to do with the wiring, and to find a switched power source for the solenoids and the MSD (which I'll get to later).

A non dented fuel rail should be here in a few days and then I'll be ready to do some checking to see if the car is running rich or lean.

That's all for now.. Tackleberry... OUT!

Damn you! So you're gonna have yours done first after all! I was THIS close to draining fluids from my B13 today. Perhaps I'll get to that tomorrow. Best case I'll have the axles out and harnesses disconnected by EOW tomorrow, but that probably won't happen! :^)

French GP, Assen Moto GP, and other distractions...

Good luck!

So that's a 4 CW motor, no? Can you tell by looking at it whether it's a 4 or 8 CW? Or are the 20Vs the only 8 CW 20VEs?

BTW, what is Kyle cutting off on the upper pan?

Finally, gotta love the Mechanix pantz that Kyle's sportin'!

VE swap update:

Well as with most swaps/installs there are ALWAYS issues that pop up.

Today we ran into four issues.

1. Fuel rail is dented in where the FPR flange is. It seems like it will work ok, but the AFPR could not be installed at this time.

2. The smaller of the two coolant sending units was cross threaded. Justin noticed it while removing the old ones.

3. The wiring harness looked less than nice. So with the help of Justin's wiring harness reconditioning services.. we retaped much of the wiring harness.. it looks MUCH better now. =)

4. Both steering rack boots were ripped. Cavern was nice enough to make a run to the parts store and pick some up.. (so now new boots are on the car!)

A HUGE thanks to Justin, Cavern, Cesar (who made a supplies run for me, and hung out with us for 1/2 the day and then drove back to cali!) and Cavern's friend Adam for coming over and helping out. This install would have taken me MUCH longer if these guys hadn't come over and helped out!!

Justin stayed pretty late tonight to try and button up the tasks that go faster with two people. The motor is in and most everything is hooked up.

I still need to install the half shafts, battery and a few small odds and ends. Then I'll fire it.

Something I'd like to add... the VE has a much cleaner design. There is more room to work on the motor (between the head and the firewall).

I'll post my pics tomorrow. Cesar took some pics too, so I'd like to get his pics aswell before I post mine.

Nice, I called last night around 10 to see how far you all were.

I wish I didn't have to bail but work pwns me; and as you can tell, I couldn't get the day off. Luckily you and Justin have the next few days off.. *choice word here*. This was a fun install, longer then our other ones but this sucker is darn near spotless. I'll be back by tonight to help plug everything else up if it hasn't been done already.

I was thinking the exact same thing!! The example picture in the AEM instructions was bigger than I made! A very large hole is required for the pipe WITH the bracket to fit through the hole. It barely fit as it is..

But hey.. maybe I'll get more air in the engine bay?

let me get this striaght gan you not wire the msd to switch with a grond insted of power? this way each soliniod can be wired to it own 4 pin relay and use grond to energise the coil nd theier for not puting any load on the msd?

SHigSpeed
Jul 04, 07, 10:36 AM
As long as you wire each solenoid to it's own external relay (or the same one as long as it can take more than 3 amps - most automotive ones are like 30A), you're fine. Grounding ONE solenoid through an MSD is fine as it's rated for 1.5 amps and the solenoid will pull a max of 1.4A or so based on their resistance.

Well, the guy I got the motor from was using the MSD box to switch both cams (with no relays). And as Jon answered.. the battery tray relocation kit came with with the AEM kit.. (which is damn nice btw).

let me get this striaght gan you not wire the msd to switch with a grond insted of power? this way each soliniod can be wired to it own 4 pin relay and use grond to energise the coil nd theier for not puting any load on the msd?

Mike, this is what I was wondering too.. why couldn't I just use one relay to provide the power to the solenoids? This would keep the load off of the MSD device. And I could trigger the relay to ground..so there'd be like no load on the MSD unit.

I've got some of the stock relays from a B13 laying around, I'll just use it.

just a thought of mine. i have been pondering this and i have ben working on makeing VE controllers this way with the use of 30$ worrth of electronics
my roomates father is a micro electronics master. i have been reading and toying but im looking to build a VE daily driver with heat and a/c so i dont drive something slow daily and i can focus time to make my turbo car bad ass. i expect my turbo car to runn 11 times on street tires thats the plan then get kicked off the track and post it up with proff than im banned lol than use this monster for some real raceing on road curse and such .
Ve car for fun and daily and keeping clean. my plain is to have both in 6 spd ve o2-03 box and turbo with the max box that i already got.

i'm runnign the msd without a relay, as well as a lot of others on the forum...

Jul 04, 07, 03:10 PM
So you guys are running power to both solenoids through the single contact/transistor in the MSD with no problems? I measured the solenoids and found 10.2 ohms each, so if you grounded both through a single contact you'd draw 2.8 amps at 14V. Probably okay I guess for the short bursts of actuation and maybe forever, but the spec says 1.5 amps...

BTW, I'm working outside today under an easy-up and two fans. "Only" going to be 104 here today so it's quite nice compared to the oven that is Arizona... :^)

_SHig

p10det
Jul 04, 07, 03:33 PM
the way i described would draw almost knowthing from the msd this way all the draw would be on the relay you could ground the soliniod on the engine meaning the msd is juast their to turn a relay on and keep it on knowthing more.

Yeah, JWT pulls tons of timing in the low end. Don't get me started on their VE program. Even the first "original" calum base VE program kicks ass. I've driven both and it's night and day. Can you guys get a reading of what stock VE fuel pressure is at idle? I think it depends on the conditions, AZ is really hot, so detonation is a usual problem, I know VE folks in cali with cooler weather that have 0 problems.

My JWT was one of the first off the line for VE's too, since then their issues seem to have gotten worse, and my JWT STILL has fuel issues, ah well it'll be fixed soon.

Ok.. I had an issue today.. the large connector for the alternator cracked diagagnally and the car left me stranded until we got some jumper cables and I pushed the connector back in the alternator.

Also, I added some R134 to my A/C system last night..and when I checked it this morning it was dead again. :*(

I checked and found that the condensor is leaking on the pass side just below where the line connects in.

Damn.. more $$.. And with it being like 113 in the shade here in my back yard (Chandler AZ)... A/C is a MUST!

Here's the area both in the dark with the black light on it and in the light.

If you see where it's kind of pink in the picture, just to the right and down you see a round cap looking connector. That's where the leak is.

That's the deal.. and I don't know how it got cracked? Or where? The condenser is off and the car is back together again, ready for me to drive it to work tomorrow (some HOT driving!!).

I looked over the condenser and couldn't find any issues on it, other than some bent fins... ? I'm guessing it *COULD* be the o-ring..but I doubt it..(I couldn't be that lucky).

If you are running a stock (USDM) ecu you should be fine with 3 bar fuel pressure. I believe that the jwt and stock ecu's expect 4 bar pressure. Maybe you or Scott can get a hold of a stock VE FPR and see what it puts out at idle.

Ok.. new issues..

Either my alternator is fried, and it's coming and going, or I did something to cause it to go out when I hooked up my MSD 8969? I took the car for a test drive after hooking up the MSD unit and about 1 mile from my house the batt and brake lights came on.

I brought the car home and checked and sure enough the car is NOT charging. I have the alternator I was using before doing the swap in my garage, I'll try it and see what happens.

Also, I can't seem to get the MSD box to send a signal at the right rpm? So either it's bad or I'm hooking it up wrong?

Ericdd
Jul 08, 07, 03:46 PM
how far off is the signal? the dash rpm guage isn't that accurate, if it's off by a 100 then maybe it's because of that. what switcher do you have the one with the pills or the one with the dial. I wouldn't think the dial would be to accurate either. and last but not least, I Know with aftermarket guages there's a wire to cut for different engine sizes (4-6-8-10) maybe theres something for the MSD as well.

Mautai916
Jul 08, 07, 04:49 PM
+1 ITs always gonna be off a little but not much. Normally you either get a signal or you don't. Check to make sure your connections are good :)

I installed my RPM rignal straight from the ECU, not the dizzy.

I decided to just tap the signal from the disti..it's the green and yellow wire I believe (soldered it on). And the rpm signal looks fine from what I can tell.. the MSD 8969 is the unit I'm using, it has a digital display. The display shows the RPM.. so I am pretty sure it's getting the signal ok. ;)

I just ran out to the garage and tested it again (After looking at the manual online again) and realized the MSD box only provides ground.. So when I hooked it up correctly, it works fine.. (So I feel dumb)..:monkey:

Oh well.. tomorrow I should get my condensor back from the shop, I'll test it..and if it's good I'll remove the radiator, install the condensor and the old alternator and then take it for a drive.

More updates as I have them..

Yeah, I didn't know the VE had the oil squirter's either (until we popped off the pans and I saw them). :)

As for the bottom end being weaker.. couldn't you just swap in a DE crank and the lower girdle?

Then you'd have the best of both worlds.. the DE and the VE..

VE also has a vastly superior oil pump, the best of all the SR's.

So I've heard (From GT20iR).. I must say.. I could NOT be happier with this motor! You guys.. GO VE!! :teeth:

Im not sure the crank is weeker but the rods are thinner than the de rods.
so i would say swap the rods for de rods and arp rod bolts and use the DE arp main stus and gerddle than you should be beefed

I would agree Mike! But since I'm not going with a VET, just a VE.. I'm good with what I got! :)

Though.. after talking to a few people, I need to bump up my timing on my VE.. I'm at like 12 degrees..and I should be around 15-20 ish.. (With stock DE ECU, DE MAF, and DE FPR... and VE injectors).

I'll adjust it tonight. I'm just worried about the 110 or so degree weather here and detonation..

The NA motors dont need a girdle. If you remove the girdle the car makes about 5-8% more power due to better windage characteristics in the oil pan. It also allows the oil to come off the crank and return to the pan faster.

the VE rods seem to be holding up NA to 9000rpm and pretty well into the 200whp range stock. If you open the motor though, i'd just get some H beam rods. they are lighter than DE rods and stronger.

I wouldnt do the crank pully on the VE. Because these engines are 4CW cranks they have different harmonics and I have seen and heard of disaster stories from people with the AL crank pulleys.

Greg V ( Gspec) does have a kick ass water pump pulley though...

Stock VE WP and Crank pulleys, UR PS and Alt pulleys. And I'm happy with them they way they are. =)

i got ya so with out the girdle it alowws the oil to travle to pan with out letting the crank drag in the oil.

my thoughts really were based on beefing up the bottum based on maybe wanting to boost a ve. prolly wont happen for a bit .

but im working on getting another p10 for DD and a ve will be going in after some goodys are put in. cant wiat. you basterds all got me wanting a ve car to

All you need is a G Spec VE crank pulley $110, and a Stanza WP pulley and you'll be set. Wouldn't need any other :) Thats what used on my current 194.5hp setup :)

Martin,

I'm going with what Charles said above. For me, my car is a street car, and I don't want to be causing issues with the motor.. For me, I already had the 4 piece pulley set on my G... so I just left the PS and Alt pulleys on there..and stock with the factory VE WP and Crank.. and so far I'm VERY happy!

Well, if the information is on a computer.. it would really help us out more if I could get the info digitally. We're not going to post Nissan material copied..but we could use a few pieces, and reference Nissan. Would take ALOT less time.

Is there anyone in your area that is really good at computers? (not saying you're not Mike, I don't know?), let me know.
