View Full Version : Mautai916 V3.0 Euro-spec VET swap :)

So what am i doing this time eh ;)? Projekt: VE-T of course! I will not be boosting a VE block because im not too secure about the weak bottom end, high compression, and the 4cw crank. So i will be using a avenir block with a VE head. SO yups, another frankenstein motor! It also doesn't help that i scored a avenir W10 motor with everything attached for only $900!! :naughty: So the results of this motor? Stronger bottom end, 8 cw crank, oil cooler, and oil squirters. I will be running a W10 T25 for now untill i can get my funds rdy for something a little bigger ;)

What sucks is that i dynoed 194hp, but found a exhaust leak on my DP.... Im sure that was worth something...

Now this portion of the post is dedicated to Dsigns for hooking me up with some AWESOME pulleys!!
So i drove for 1 hr to finally go see this guy that i have never been able to see for like the past 2-3 years that i've been on the forum and he's only 1 hr away! haha. Anyhoo.... I drive for an hr to pick up some UR pulleys from him, and got more than what i had expected :naughty:
The box the pulleys came in

covered with my SPEC stage 2+ PP. Yeah their discs suck ass, but their PP's are awesome!
http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j173/mautai916/DET/VET/day4052.jpg
I also tried to clock my turbo upwards because when it points downwards, it hits my front mount. You will need some GIANT snap ring pliers in order to do so because those snap rings are HUGE. Or... you can do what i did... :) Go to Harbor Freight and get some 16'' needle nose pliers and mod them to work!!
For sale @ Harbor Freight for 12.99!
http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j173/mautai916/DET/VET/day4080.jpg
Take a dremel and use a grinding stone to cut grooves in it so it can retain the snap ring when you attempt to get it out. Otherwise the snap ring will just slide off the needle nose pliers. *Note* Use the 90* angled snap ring pliers cause its the only one that will work.
http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j173/mautai916/DET/VET/day4081.jpg
Compressor housing removed just for kicks. No need to remove if your just clocking it up, but i wanted to take a look inside :)

pffft, you obviously dont know Martin. he installed the motor, put on the head, took engine out, installed turbo, putit back in, took motor out, put pulleys on, put motor back on, then took it out to give it a good clean with a toothbrush and sweat from Chuck Norris(ok well he just used a mix of Simple Green and Arm and Hammer Baking Soda toothpaste since Chuck Norris doesn't sweat. But i heard Chuck Norris tears cure cancer....too bad he never cries.) he expects nothing but perfection with this motor.

Still I would recommend to relocate the oil-pressure gauge sender. It seems you are using a brass adapter: it will crack or tear in due course. Please do not let happen to you what happened to me, time ago. I narrowly escaped a huge oil-leak....

that brass fitting is actually pretty beefy and its been coated with martin's manjuice so it shouldnt break at all.
Yep.. that and the VDO gauge sender is about 1/4 the weight of an autometer one, plus the oil line is taking some of the load as well. And I'm sure Martin's manjuice helps too.
i'v seen an adaper plate that goes between the oil filter. why not use on of those to power the vdo sender and feed oil to the turbo?

He doesn't need an oil line for the turbo. He is using a Avenir block so he is using the stock banjo bolt oil and water lines on the front of the block.

Day 5
The motor is in!! :) So the motor is in..... what else is left to do? intercooler piping (custom), get new belts for UR pulleys, hook up remaining water lines, drill tap new holes for compressor housing to mount wastegate (since i clocked turbo upwards, the mounting bracket for the wastgate has shifted), bolt on turbo, mount intercooler and connect piping = running motor :) sooo close!!
Btw, when doing motor swaps.... having an engine balancer makes the job soooo much easier!

After bolting on the head, we went ahead and bolted down the intake manifold and found a little problem. Due to the closeness of the of the oil filter housing and the corner of the intake manifold, we were unable to bolt on the intake manifold from the DET/VE hybrid. Nothing major, just a little grinding fixed that problem right away :)

Day 6 - Intercooler piping!
Well for starters, the intercooler i got is really beefy and if hung directly below the bumper support, it would be hanging below the bumper. To compensate, i trimmed the inside of my front bumper support just a little to accomadate for the massive intercooler :)

Luis must of heard my comment and thus showed me how real men cut piping!
http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j173/mautai916/DET/VET/Day6015.jpg
pic of hot piping finished. We used Hotshot's candycane pipe and modded it slightly. All we did was just cut off the last bend of the piping so we can turn it in a different direction. This was mainly because originally the end of the candy cane would point directly at the a/c compressor. We cut the end pipe, and pointed it more towards the front of the motor instead. You can see where we cut but the location of the black coupler.

Woohoo! Its getting closer and closer! Almost to the finish line now! So this time i finished all my intercooler piping. Got it all welded, cleaned and painted :) I also clocked my w10 turbo UP and modded to reuse the stock wastegate bracket. No need for anything custom! Just reusing original parts :) Enjoy!
First off, i got all my pipes welded at A1 Muffler. Great job, good people. Highly recommended if you need any welding done in Sacramento, CA! :)

How To: Clock up turbo utilizing stock parts
First, get a HUGE pair of snap ring pliers to take off the snap ring in order to remove the compressor housing on the t25. I recommend going to Harbor Freight and picking up a set of 16'' needle nose pliers.
http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j173/mautai916/DET/VET/day4080.jpg
Remember, you hafta cut some grooves in it or else the snap rings will just slip off. For $14.00 out the door, you just can't get a better deal ;)
http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j173/mautai916/DET/VET/day4081.jpg
compressor off with stock brackets
http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j173/mautai916/DET/VET/day4082.jpg
remove stock brackets, position new brackets where you want them, mark with sharpie, then drill + tap
http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j173/mautai916/DET/VET/day718.jpg
drilled and tapped :)
http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j173/mautai916/DET/VET/day719.jpg
NEXT, in order to reuse your stock wastegate bracket, you have to mod it a little in order for it to fit in the new position after clocking the turbo. Otherwise it will just get in the way of the compressor outlet.
http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j173/mautai916/DET/VET/day717.jpg
http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j173/mautai916/DET/VET/day716.jpg

Compressor housing mounted back on turbo + manifold
http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j173/mautai916/DET/VET/day77.jpg
http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j173/mautai916/DET/VET/day76.jpg
Now WHY/ HOW does this work to your advantage? So that the wastegate sits properly in its new position and pushes the rod STRAIGHT out in stead of in a slanted position.
http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j173/mautai916/DET/VET/day74.jpg
http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j173/mautai916/DET/VET/day75.jpg
IMPORTANT: When removing all the stock brackets on the turbo, remember to leave this ONE bolt in and put some orange RTV on it to seal it up. Its because that one hole is drilled completely thru the compressor housing. If you don't seal it up, you will have one nasty boost leak, and YES, it comes like this stock so just remember to plug it up.

DAY 7
So we got her running but haven't updated yet... so here it goes! Thhe car turned over on the 2nd attempt. We realized that the injectors were frozen so we attached each injector indvidualy to a 12v source (car battery) and unfroze them that way. Then the car just turned over! :) Suprisingly the motor is extremely quiet for not having a downpipe! Yes, she's currently running an open exhaust cause my new DP will be here tomorrow from GoFastDepot ;) Anyhoo i drove the car around the block as is and everything seemed like it was good. Ill be doing one last final inspection prior to me driving her like the way she wants it ;)
For today all i did was wrap things up and installed my gauges. Very simple and straight forward installation. Very nice, stock looking gauges. Big thanxs to ChrisCar for the first installs ( http://www.sr20forum.com/technical-information-library/143411-gauge-installation-writeup-gauges.html):)
First i had to cut the PS line due to the fact that it was in the way of the intercooler. Nothing special, just trimmed it and slaped a hose to connect both ends. Works awesome :)

Update: Car drives very nicely. But we got 2 minor problems: Car missfires a little when we redline with low cams, but missfires a lot once the big cams engage. Getting new plugs cause i was still rocking the old plugs from my VE. Ill be getting bkr7e's this time. Also, not to mention my battery was at 12v since i haven't ran the car is a long time. Having it charge back up to 14v should help a little.
Ok... so tats my first problem...... 2nd problem.... Luis broke my axle while we were testing the car for the first time at full boost..... he broke it and left.... that asshole.... :dead:
LOL'z j/k. Na, not his fault, but he WAS the one driving the car when it broke! Here's what sucks...... we drove it under boost the first time for ~ 15 mins and he broke the passenger axle. The worst part is that i never got to drive it!!! WTF! lol!!! :surprised But anyhoo we broke the axle WITHOUT the cams engaged. torquey bastard...

Day 8
Woohoo. Fixed that stupid axle and finally got the car on the road. Car sounds nice and feels great. When we took it out the first time around for a drive, she only hit 6 psi and it felt AWESOME. Did a pressure check when i got home, found 2 leaks, fixed them, went out and hit 9 psi! Woohoo! big difference! hahah.
Ill get more vids later, but for now here's how she sounds with an open downpipe. amazingly, its not really that loud considering that there's no exhaust hooked up ;)

*A quick note on passenger axles* Its hard to find LSD passenger axles. The other solution is to get a NON-LSD axle and install it, but just make sure that you use the non-lsd axle BRACKET in order to fit. So in short, use lsd axle bracket with lsd axle, and non lsd axle with non lsd axle bracket. Both axles are the same length, just make sure you have the same corresponding bracket :)
New axle (bottom) and old axle (top)
http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j173/mautai916/DET/VET/Day8010.jpg
here you can see the diff in the axle brackets. They mount onthe same location on the block. The only diff is the bracket.

Well anyhoo, the car is pretty much 95% done. It's completely drivable and so far no major problems. But i did experience a FEW minor problems.
Problems
1) idle - My car idles fine, but when i let the idle drop after shifting at high rpms (5k and over), the rpm's will drop all the way down and stall the car. SOMETIMES it will catch continue running, but i say about 80% of the time, it just dies. I do have 9 lbs fidanza fly and UR 4 pc pulley set. Possibly that i have too much weight reduction and rpm's falling too fast?
2) foul plugs - I drove it with bkr7e's gapped @ 35 and it drove FLAWLESSLY. No misfires or anything. But about 20-30 miles later, when i give the car a quick pull, it will start miss firing VERY badly. I went home and changed the plugs with some spare bkr6e's i had lying around and gapped them to 35 again. Any ideas to WHY they fouled out so fast? Now im just wondering how long the bkr6e's will last.
Im also getting my test pipe tomorrow, and hopefully get a o2 bung installed so i can do a quick wideband to get all the gremlins figured out. :)
Awesome progress man. I can't wait to see Dyno numbers.

I have a 2.5'' exhaust so i figure i match with a 2.5'' dp. IM glad i did because the 2.5'' dp hands like 1'' BELOW the crossmember! which sucks ass cause i already scraped it once by accident... :( Im glad i didn't get 3'' cause i would have no ground clearance on my lowered G if i did :(

how come you never posted the "walk it out" video of you dancing when you first started the car?
I don't think the flywheel should have any adverse effects with a turbo car. I haven't noticed any such issues with my turbo car with pullies and an 8lb flywheel. As far as the idle, maybe you should try cleaning your AAC/IACV valve out. Take it off and clean it out with carb cleaner. Did you verify the timing again like I told you?

yeah pullies n flywheel should be ok. its probably something else since i have those same things.
Looking at the broken axle nub.. I bet it broke because the axle carrier bracket wasn't bolted on. There was probably in and out motion and the only thing holding it together was the C-clip.. And thats where the break is..

cam timing already verified, and iacv was cleaned prior to installing on intake mani. Alex suggested that i might be running rich thus causing a bad idle AND fouling out plugs. Gotta get this car on the wideband so we can veryify my a/f is correct :)

Sep 06, 07, 03:56 PM
check the timing, check the vacuum hose routing + connections, check aacv, check tps.
your stalling out issue may lie in there somewhere.
as far as lightening up the crank that much, it's advised not to go below a 13 lb. flywheel. not for the fast revving down reasoning, but so you don't shoot through your revs so fast, so you can hold boost longer. but then again that's meant for higher powered turbo cars, and that can also be manipulated by changing gear ratios. since you're keeping everything "stock" 9 lbs. won't be so bad. Also, changing out the flywheel and crank pulley also opens the doors to possibility of crank walk, leading to cracked crankshafts. It's a very rare instance, so I really wouldn't call it a concern.
dunno if any of that is any help for you, but i was kinda just thinking and typing at the same time.

UPDATE
A o2 bung will be installed on my dp in the next couple of days so i can stick the wideband in and tune the lil beast ;) I will also do another pressure test to make sure that i don't have any more leaks. I did my first pressure test and fixed 3 leaks. My boost then went from 6 psi to 9 psi. Woot woot! What a difference! :scream: The idle issue is still there, so i just gotta double check all my connections/vacuum lines to make sure everything is good to go and not leaking.
So guess what i did today? I install my resonated test pipe today :) Car drives awesome! The test pipe really woke the turbo up! Drives faster, pulls harder, etc. One thing i did notice was that it made my exhaust a little deeper and just very slightly louder. It seems to have given it a nicer "growl" ;) The rear o2 sensor had to be relocated due to the fact that i didn't have space to relocate it on the test pipe.
