View Full Version : P10 front speaker 6.5" adapter?

Before the forums changed to the new format, someone had posted that there was an adapter that will fit the front speaker brackets of a P10 to allow use of 6.5" speakers with minimal modification. Does anyone know which adapter this is and where I can get it. As far as I remember, it was some part designed for a Chevy (Cavalier?). Also, what modifications are required to fit these? Thx in advance.

There was a thread like this already and I can't remember where here? I remember that it was bought at Best Buys! It depends
the size of your speakers magnet too. I was able to install a Boston Acoustics into the stock location, but it took me days to get it right. Try the spacers that someone tried it on their car to make your life easier. Keep searching here.

i found a diagram from automotive forums, go there for it
but the final truth is you can fit 6.5in in front, with no cutting of the metal door frame. go to best buy and ask for a 95-99 chevy cavalier 4x6 to 6.5in conversion plate. If you ask for help on a G20, they won't know anything about it.
Go find a post telling you how to remove the door panel, the 3 screws on bottom, 2 by the hinge, one on the side, and the one screw that you have to pop off the power window button.
Unscrew the mounting for the 4x6 speaker, you will need to put this on top of the 6.5in plate and mark the holes and edges on it. The chevy plate is too wide and the hole are in different places, that sucks, but you can work around it. Cut the plastic to the right size and drill the holes! Bingo, you can now screw this plate into the stock screw holes and the speaker will fit on the frame.
Only you need to clear the door panel. The speaker grill is plently big to find the 6.5", but there is a thin peice of vinyl you need to cut at the top of the speaker grill on the back fo the door panel. This will give room for you larger speakers.
Hook up the wires and screw back on the door, bingo, you got 6.5in in front. BTW, you can remove the black paper that prevens you from seeing through the grill. This allows everyone to see your tight new speakers!

Hey, guess what, I did it and took some pictures. Anyone want to see? It took a couple hours to do the first door and get it right, but now I should have the other one done real quick. Want some pics, let me know.

i am in the process of fitting 2 MB Quart speaker sets, 215 and 328. If i can fit a 6in speaker in the doors with little modification that would be great. I have already custom made a wood template that fits a 5 1/4 in speaker, but fock it, if i can fit a 6in, then that is what i would prefer to go with, so pics please!!! thanks

Those pics were very helpful man thanks.
did the door pannel fit back on with no modification??? If not, what did you have to do? How much did you pay for them? How much clearence is there between the back of the magnet and the window? I ask b/c I am trying to find out the maximum clearence that will fit with the cavalier plate....Thanks

thanks for the offer, let me get back to you however, i have a few more places to check this week, and i found a shop that will make custom ones for $30, so it might not be worth it to ship from miami cause by the time i pay for the plates, shipping, and sum money to you for your trouble, i would be more than what i can get custom ones for, so if all else fails i will let you know man, thanks again though for the offer too, why does best buy sell em down there, but not in ny? Maybe some questions are not ment to be answered????

"the final truth is you can fit 6.5in in front, with no cutting of the metal door frame" yeah..., for most 6.5 speakers but don't say the final truth, because all speakers are not all made the same:asian: Unfortunately in my case, I had to cut a piece of metal because I have an irregular humongous magnet on my speakers  just to clarify that nothing is final ;)

Nice pictures, those are helpful. Did you put some kind of spacer behind the adapter bracket? In the pictures it looks like foam but i'm confused because it also isn't compressed down at all... Thanks for your help

my 6.5 speaker fit alright in their 4x6in homes, a lil cozy, but alright. What made it a little tighet fit, but better sound, is dynamat, i put two layers between the speaker mount and the door, and 1 between the speaker and the mount. It has a great new sound: bass, clarity, volume. I need the saem in the back, people swear i have subs.

I ended up getting them installed before I saw your dynamat sugestion. I used rope caulk to make it air tight which worked really well. Similar effect, with the new ultra lite Kenwood 6.5" speakers in the back the bass is great. No need for subs for me.
Thanks,

I just installed some new 6.5's in rear as well....WHOA....man what have I been missin'!!!!! Even though I still have the stock head unit, the difference in sound is amazing. There' so much bass coming from back there my girl thaough that put in a sub:o . I still haven't put in the 6.5's in front yet, but I will very soon. In fact, I may put some 6.5 midbasses in back to get that real heavy bass without a sub.:monster:

Has anyone tried to fit a set of rear speaker to the front adapters? Dubm question I'm sure, but for an otherwise stock system, this would be a pretty good upgrade considering how many people probalby have their stock speakers lying around.

Hmmm...there's a thought. :surprised
I can't see why it wouldn't work. But then, there are a few aftermarket speakers that would fit, sound much cleaner and cost a few bucks anyways so it wouldn't long before you feel the urge to put in better speakers.;)

What did you put in the back? I'm looking to put some new 6.5s, or 6 3/4s in the back, and what you describe is exactly what I'm looking for, especially since I'd also be running off my head unit. Thx

Well, I really got lucky. I mean, REALLY LUCKY. =)=)=)
My buddy gave me a pair of 6.5's Digital Audio 3-ways rated at 120RMS/240MAX watts for $20. I never heard of them before but my rear speakers were shot so anything would be an improvement.:-\
Oh, and does anyone recall this thread:
http://www.g20.net/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=8271
Well, I figured what the hell, since no one else is interested, I'll try 'em. If nothing else I can always sell them. I got 4 Nissan/Clarion amps for $16, two for the rear speakers in the G20 and two for the Nissan Altima GLE. No biggie. But while browsing the web I came across this on Altimas.net:The car has 6 speakers, and 2 Clarion amps in the trunk. Model numbers EN-9611-54 (front) and EN-9611-55 (rear). After being unable to find any info about them online, I had a buddy that works at CarToys take them out and hook them up to this computer that measures their performance, like a Dyno test for amps. He gave me a print out which says the front amp is putting out 38.7 watts RMS x 2, and rear is doing almost identical at 39.4 watts RMS x 2.
And this:The amps are rated 38.7 watts RMS x 2 and 39.4 watts RMS x 2. Translated into max ratings, which you are referring to, that is about 80 watts MAX x 2 for each amp. The aftermarket decks put out at the most 52 watts MAX x 4, which is really only 23 watts MAX x 4, as compared to using the Clarion amps which are running at 38.7 and 39.4 watts. Paired with some Infinity Perfect speakers, that would create an excellent system, with half the money. Someone, please let me know if I am wrong, but I don't believe so.
Hmmm....I thought. I put in the Digital Audio's and the Altima GLE amps with the stock head unit....
=) =) =)
Wow! Man, I should've did this a lot sooner!!!
It may not be the best sounding system, but man, considering I spent only $36($20 speakers/$16 OEM Nissan amps), I have one hell of a system! Oh, and did I mention that I have some 6.5's Eclipse 2-way's in front? Well, I went to the junkyard one day and saw them. The junkman said that they were out of a wrecked Mitsubishi Eclipse...:cheeky: Sold 'em to me for $25/pair.=) Just to be safe, I put some 200hz "Bass Blockers" on them so I don't blow them when I have my music up($10/pair).
Being that nearly all the major component were bought used for dirt cheap, just for kicks, I've nicknamed my car stereo the "Sanford n' Son I.C.E. entertainment upgrade package!
Questions, anyone?;)

its a show that was on back in the day. iirc it was kind of a rundown theme on the show. but i may be wrong about the theme.
Careful friends if you plan to go with the plastic 4x6-6.5 adapter make sure you don't buy 6.5's with huge magnets because if you open your window all the way you'll notice theres not too much depth to work with. I've got 7" dedicated midbass's and had to make custom sealed pods. Theres some guy in NZ with custom door pods with freakin 10s IN HIS P10 DOORS.
Also if you are planning to put hi-end pricey speakers in your doors I'd advise not to cut corners by buying an adapter but make your own baffle out of MDF. You'll get way better sound from it. Nice stuff can sound like crap if installed poorly.
(tangent) My roomate spent a couple bills and bought some kappa's in his doors and hated the sound because it seemed like there were only highs. I opened the door panels and they had a hacked up plastic adapter and two screws holding each speaker in. I bet him I can make it sound way better for under 40bucks and we shook hands. Theres a local shop that had tons of overstocked speakers dirt cheap and I spotted some Peerless oversized 6.5's for 8bucks each. Peerless isn't really a big car audio name but its drivers are in decent/nice home audio stuff and there are few underestimated speakers made around denmark. These had really nice surrounds, magnets and mean looking yellow spyders. I ripped out the kappas made a baffle out of MDF and fiberglassed some rubber plant buckets to the back of them to seal them added a couple old JBL Gti tweeters sitting around. And his car is the freakin ish now and I won 40 bucks.

Yeah. The show was set in the mid-70's about an old man named Fred Sanford and his son running an antiques shop(read:junkman) in LA. I kinda likened my setup to that because most of the major components are second-hand used parts that I got for dirt cheap.
I may try these so I can get more bass without having to get a separate sub:
Kicker Mid-bass speakers... (http://www.crutchfield.com/S-U8al9fSpidk/cgi-bin/ProdView.asp?s=0&c=10&g=99000&I=206RMB6&o=m&a=0&cc=01&avf=N)
Might not be for a couple weeks though. But if I do get these, I'll sell the 3-ways I have now for $20(shipping included).

I put in a set of Kenwood 6.5" speakers from Best Buy. They were over $150 but they were worth it. They are the only set there with a super light magnet. It's new technology and the bass is great.

Just an FYI to anyone looking to replace the 4 x 6's in the front with 6 1/2's - the conversion is not THAT easy. The conversion plate does not sit flush against the door panel after it's cut down and shaped. The top and bottom of the circular part of the conversion need to be altered quite a bit or you need to craft a spacer that sits between the door panel and the conversion plate. Just wanted people to know what their getting into. (And BTW, the 6 1/2's sound MUCH better compared to 4 x 6's!).

True. It may well require some modification, but truth be told it's not hard to do. And yes, the better sound coming from a 6.5" is well worth the effort!!!!
