View Full Version : Had a blowout yesterday on the track...

good thing it was the last 15 minutes of the day (last session of the day) and thanks to super stiff (runflat type sidewall) of the Avon Tech Ra tires..

but yeah.. this was interesting.... It happened with over a mile and a half left to get around the track on this tire:

wow, good thing you and the car are ok. those tires are really good for that. try that on a normal tire and see the direfence :)

were those on the P10? good to hear you didn't get hurt.

they were mostly run on the p10, but this past weekend they were on the miata (mounting on 4x100/4x114.3 dual bolt pattern 15x7 rims to run on both cars)

It was the left rear so it was o.k. to control and drive off the track completely flat and still not wear down and shred the tirewall.... it explains why they are so difficult to mount even with a runflat tire machine anyway!

did you wear them down that far, or is a defect in the tire?

well... after 1400 track miles... I suspect it was a little bit of everything..

We think it was low on air, low on tread left... and perhaps (possibly) damaged in mounting since it took 3 people on a run flat machine to mount them thanks to the ultra stiff side walls.

Ironic the other 3 still have life left on them (although not a ton.. lol)

...we inspected the tires before that last run group session BUT failed to double check the air pressure so yeah.. oooops..

I doubt we'll ever know for sure but we expected to cord them this weekend (actually, we expected to cord them 3 track days ago and they just kept going) so I think its safe to say we got a good long life out of them ;)

haha yea thats alot of track miles for slicks...

why do slicks have to be so expensive :(

yeah...

slicks are so expensive cause of LOW production quantity...

They charge MORE cause they simply don't sell as many (so cost to produce is up there.. sigh)

..the cost of our expensive hobby....

might as well take advantage of the universal 4 lug rims.

YOU KNOW IT!!!

..and the offset is the same on both as well ;)

So Chris tell me something. Was it worth the build? Now that you finally are tracking the car what seems to be pretty often I'm sure you're happy you did it, even though there were a ton of headaches. I think down the road once I retire my car to the track I am going to be making some big changes and I am curious to see if it will be worth it or not from a "fun" perspective. Thanks!

the car has been giggles on the track... especially when it passes significantly more expensive cars.. but some of the PITA things were a HUGE PITA

If I had it to do all over again.. what I would do differently is this:

1) NOT buy a 'crashed' front end damage/bent core support car (too much a PITA to fix up)

2) NOT buy without doing a compression/leakdown test

..and if we go for a 2nd P10 track beastie, we would make sure of the following:

3) NOT a midwest RUST bucket (probably buy from Arizona)

and

4) Probably go for a 91 through 93 (lowport before airbags) for less hassle and lighter weight to start (and just swap in an LSD tranny and axles)

I'm basically just looking for the shell & a decent interior. The motor & tranny will get chucked out as soon as it gets home.

then you have an easier time just finding an auto 91 ;)

Shit thats crazy!
Did u just keep going down the track and to the pits/padok or did u just pull off the road?

I obviously noticed the issue right away, got out of harms way, drove offline, turned on the hazard light and drove OFFLINE slowly around the rest of the track in into the paddock (they put out the white flag for slow moving vehicle and only 2 cars had to pass me during my get of the track safely excursion)

even with the huge tear it still took 50 mins of cutting with a angle grinder and 4 green cutoff wheels to get that thing off:dead:my face got burnt by melted flying rubber:zoinks: btw chris when i broke down the side walls the outside bead was ripped missing about 1 1/2'' right near where the valve is...
oh yeah puddles suck with slicks that is all:naughty:

you say interesting but whats so interesting about it? you said they were worn down and at end of life so i guess it should have been expected

actually the other 3 tires still have decent life left on them and this one would have if it didn't blow out...

Bill is running 2 of the tires on the front of his p10 right now (thus his comment about puddles being no fun on race slicks ;) )

..so the tire 'blew out' a bit premature.. I think they would have had another 2 or 3 track days left on them at least without the blowout...

i barely found my 91 5 spd. no sunroof and black dash. hella hard to find, plus it was a donation vehicle so no damage to the front end. all i did was literally change passenger side axle and power steering hose, got it for $300. 91's are the shit lightest out there plus i got cloth seats, well actually 1/2 my interioir is gutted.
