Is a 96 good for ve swap?

like the title states. Just trying to find the best model that would be easiest to pass emissions in ny

Being in NY, I would stick to 96 or older simply because they dont check anything but the mechanicals for inspection. In other words, you don't have to worry about check engine lights being on, or previous CELs having to be cleared.

Makes life tons easier come inspection time

by law 96 is the first year OBD2 was required to be in all vehicles. Not sure individual state emissions laws, but in AZ 96 and newer they only check the ecu for any codes. I bought my 96 p10 for that fact. One other factor you will need to consider is tuning, what are you planning on doing for your ecu tuning? Nistune would require a 95 or older ECU to work. Select ecus older than 96 do still have OBD2 in them, you would need to look for one of those. If going with JWT, check with them to find out what ECU they can take, and if they can retain OBD2. I wouldn't suggest simply doing a piggy back because at that point it becomes a lot harder to tune the car without tripping a check engine. JWT would be the easiest option. Other wise, go with a 95 or older to just have a smog check on the rollers. Properly tuned VE's do very well with emissions.

    Lol @ dane 97's rock!

    ^ truth.

you can still make it happen but is not as easy as 95 and older.

Look for older, OBD1 one would be your best bet.

    Lighter
    96 G20t Curbweight: 2954 lbs.
    93 and Older: 2745 lbs.

OBD1 = Better tuning options including TunerCode and Nemu boards

Older = Easier to pass emissions, especially sniffers since VE's are very clean motors.

I have a P11 with a VE swap, P11 weighs around 2980lbs. It's way too slow with 2.5" SSAC header, 3" exhaust, bunch of here and there mods and a fully tunable ECU. Going turbo on the newer P10's to compensate for the weight would work better.

I think 96 is really easy to do. I did a swap in a 96 se-r he has no codes at all and passes all srt tests.

I even got a 95 p10 ecu in a members b15 working and compleatly codeless car but he recenlty recked it
