ticking? intake
under heavy throttle and only when the car is in gear i hear a ticking almost fluttering sound coming from the left side. it almost sounds like a valve tape but the car will not do it when reving the car in neutral. i'm thinking it's the cai rubbing against the hole i cut out ,,but could it be a valve or lifter,,,i want to take it to the dealer but i'm kind of scared they'll be like well you have a cai and pulley so take care of it yourself

I'm thinking thats why you can hear it better...becuase the sound resonates in the CAI more than rubber tubing. The question is...is this sound normal?

Hey Rooster, is it only when you are, not flooding, but giving it some serious gas at lower rpm's, say from 1700-3000 rpms?

They'll never be like that, they may not cover some thing under warranty because of the mods, but they'll always fix your car... it's just, whether you'll shell out the $$$ for it or not.... But the dealership saw my pop charger and complimented me on it, said it was "cool"... but never said one thing about it, and the car was there for warranty work... as for the pulleys, I dont think they'd even notice those.... well, are they colored?

yeh they're red,,but after further inspection i think it's a leaky exhaust manifold,,,which is weird cause believe it or not i had the factory cat back replaced under warranty but i never replaced the exhaust manifold,,hard to believe right,,,the car is a 2000,,
what makes me think it's the exhaust manifold is the fact that i dont hear that flutter or valve like sound when i rev the shit out of the car in neutral ,,but the second i put it in first and rev it hard as i inch forward you hear it clearly so the shift of the motor has something to do with it so it's either the manifold or some gasket or flexpipe....
maybe i should stop beating the snot out of the car,,,,
nah,,,i enjoy it too much to stop pushing it,,lol

Hmm... I was thinking it was the noise I got, but it doesn't sound like it... mines from bout 1500 rpms -2800.... after that it goes away, but it's a steady ticking that only occurs when, well, it seems I'm giving it more gas then it can consume at that low rpm... but it's a steady ticking, which I always attributed to the lifters or cams... hmm....

Are you sure you're not just hearing the cams.. it's not a steady tick, but more of a random noise?

yeh i'm almost positive cause i can't hear it unless it's under hard throttle,,if i slowly rev it up towards redline withought the car moving you don't hear a thing

See, you keep makin me go back and fourth here...
Now this comment makes it sound like the sound I got goin on.. cause mine will only do it when it's in gear too, but once it passes like 3000 rpms, mine disappears... does yours disapper (while in gear) after you pass 3k rpms??

well i went to the dealer today and i got someshitty news.
i left there kinda mad cause of what they said.
could be a possible bent valve or the rocker or lifter.
the shop foreman wasnt' there so nothing was done cause i was told that they might not cover that under warraanty cause damage like that means abuse. well needless to say i flipped.
i told them that that was the first time in 50,000 miles that i ever came in for some serious warranty work and i would insist that they pay for it cause i do not abuse the car. (ahem but i do push it pretty much everyday) but they don't need to know that.
is there a way to delete any info on the computer about possible close to redline shifts...lol
but lucky for me my cousin was there with me buying a fx35 and i kind of gave them an ultimatum...i said if you don't fix my car u can forget about the 42000 dollar deal you just had with my cousin ,,,
well needless to say my car will be hanging out at the dealer the week of the 20th with loaner included of course..

I don't think the G20 has tattle-tale codes... it MAY have something that shows if the vehicle speed limiter has been surpassed, or if engine speed has hit the fuel cut.
However, most asian cars do not have such things as of around 2001. Americans are leaning towards this practice, but let's hope everyone else doesn't jump on this big-brother bandwagon.
If this is under warranty mileage, and you do regular oil changes (even better if they have documentation), I see no real reason why this should not be covered. Maybe try taking it to another Infiniti dealer?

oh boy,,,,i went to my friends performance shop and he listened to it and he is almost positive that it's a lifter...yikes!
i just pray to god that the dealer won't give me shit

what does a lifter actually do and how hard is it to change,,what would cause a bent valve if that is what it is,,,i went to my boy who owns a performance shop and he thinks it's a lifter,,,i couldn't wait till monday to find out exactly what it was
