Does anyone here know how to make an out of state (Ohio) titled car pass CA smog tests? Does any new equipment need to be bolted on to do so? Thanks ya'll.

needs alll OEM parts cant have any aftermarket parts on it other then you can get away with jwt s3's maybe s4's but intakes/headers good luck(inless you pay extra and know someone who'd pretend they didnt see anything during hte visual test)

FOr Cali smog you CANNOT have any aftermarket header, intake, exhaust, etc. Just like "805" said...unless you "know someone" or have C.A.R.B. certified intake.
If your car is stock, make sure it's in good running order....newer plugs/wires/etc. The Cali emssion tests are among the toughest in the country..!

And make sure the timing is set to stock.
You're probably concerned about whether your car is California emissions certified, since many cars until the last 10 years or so were sold in two configurations: California, and a 49 state version.
If you are moving to California, and have owned the car, it does not matter if your car is only 49 state certified, so long as your car passes the smog test. The smog test is not as stringent as the CARB test that car mfrs have to pass to qualify new vehicles for California certification. For example, I "imported" a 49-state Isuzu Trooper into California, and it passed the smog test fine. Just make sure to have your car tuned-up before doing the smog test.
If you still want to see if your G20 is California emissions certified (my '95 touring, which I bought new in New Jersey, was 50 state compliant, as were all G20s built that year), look under the hood to see if there is a label that indicates so.
If you want to read more about importing cars into California, check this Link.
With regard to underhood modifications, part of the smog test involves a visual check. If you have any aftermarket mods that are readily apparent to the eye, you will fail the test unless that part has been CARB certified.

Thought I was the only active member on this forum that purchased a G20 "new" back in 1995 and still has it. Good to know you did as well. Damn fine cars!Originally posted by RainMeister

Back to topic: Once you pass the Cali smog, remember you must have it emission checked every 2 years. So if you put on the parts that aren't CARB certified, you'll have to take 'em off in two years to "legally" pass the test. Cali is a PITA.![]()
