    What does this do?

I replace the distributor cap today and noticed this knob that goes back and forth. What does it do? When I got the new one, the knob was facing straight down, but the one on the car was facing to the left. So I aligned the new one to face to the left too, but no clue why.

    I circled the knob:

Could it be something to "retard" the timing to drive on other octane fuels? I know some Opel's (Vauxhall? dont know if they are sold in the US) has that, to switch between 95 and 98 octane (european, not RON. I think that would be..91 and 93 RON, or something like that. So anyways, they can switch back and forth, to adjust the timing to what they are driving on..could it be something like that?

Now: 1998 P11 GT "Top Sport" [KL0 shadow with VE-surprise, AGX+H&R. See more.]
Sold: 1992 P10 LX [Lightweight rustracer with SR20Di. Now probably deceased.]

It's just a breather cap. It does nothing at all!

Becuase when there was a coil ('91-'93), the coil would connect there. Since '94-'96 are electronic, no more need for that connector.
