    MT tranny fill plug

    Hi guys,

Anyone have any awesome ideas on how to get the fill plug off? The one on my g20 is pretty rusted and repeated applications of WD40 have been unable to do anything.

Would PB Blaster work any better? I seem to hear that product come up pretty often in this forum. Should I run the car and try to heat it up? (Ran the car yesterday and got the drain plug loose, but fill plug wouldn't budge so I let wd40 soak overnight)

    Thanks, all suggestions are welcome.

And hope it doesn't break anything....

It has been known to be so tight to actually break a piece of the tranny casing away before it comes loose.

    WD40 isn't really a penetrating oil, it's a water dispersant. Try a proper penetrating oil/fluid...

I actually already tried using a 1/2" breaker bar with a 1/2" to 3/8" adapter. Should I go get myself a real 3/8" breaker bar and try it with that? I'm still soaking the plug in wd40 right now, hoping it'll miraculously loosen.

OK, will try PB Blaster after I get some tomorrow.

Mark, you said that it might break the tranny case? Do you guys think it's worth the risk? I mean, I want a smoother shifter, but I can't really afford to be repairing a tranny right now.

It has been known when brute force and ignorance were used...take your time and you'll be good.

If you can get some heat into it with a propane/butane torch it may help. Don't go mad with an oxy-acyetelene set as it's only ally surrounding the plug..

If all fails then you could fil it through the speedo drive hole. I'll look for the fill level specs for that method for you..

    Mark,

Thanks dude. You always give great advice. I'll soak with PB blaster for a few days before I try taking off the fill plug again.

    yeah, PB is the shiznit!!!

Also, take a tin can and use that to shim the 3/8 drive in the square hole. The 3/8 drive is just a hair too small and you can strip that plug quickly if you dont take up the space with something.

Also, TIGHTEN the plug a bit if it doesnt loosen, this breaks the rust seal on there. Always coat with anti-sieze when you put it back in.

sweet, PB worked like a charm. Also got a bigger breaker bar...

Should I put some liquid gasket on the first few threads of each plug? I noticed that both the drain and fill plug were covered in liquid gasket stuff.

Also, is it ok to just leave the car on the ramp to drain? I totally forgot that it is advisable to have car level when draining so I drove up the ramps for this project. Should I figure out some way to lower it to level? Thanks.

you dont need sealant ont he threads, they are a tapered thread and self seal. I would put some anti sieze on there tho.
