96 P10 electrical problem and engine noise

If you can take a minute to read through this and brainstorm on it, Ild really appreciate the help. Also I'm on a mobile so I'll have to repost 'cause I can't scroll down in the text box.

anyway the electrical problem is really strange.

I was driving around one night and the dash lights go out. I pulled over to do a walk around and I had no tail lights. Brake lights were still good with pedal depressed but no tail. Tail light fuse was blown. Put in a new one, good for 3 seconds and blown. I had an extra stop light switch so I replaced it the next day and this is where it really gets weird. With the new switch, brake lights were always lit, car on car off no matter what the brake lights were always lit. So I used that for night driving and the original switch for day driving.

did that for about a week. Also with the original switch the dash would light up with the brake depressed. But now there are no lights ever in the back (no red lights, turns and reverse still light up, headlights still good) and I'm blowing 2 fuses instantly, brake light 20amp and tail light 10 amp. The running lights in front are out too. With the replacement switch the running lights would lightwith the control by the wheel "off" and would not light wit the control set for the running lights, middle spot. So.. Short somewhere? Bad ground?

the engine noise sounds like a whirr. Sort of like driving in reverse but more problematic sounding. I'll try to get a video with good sound but I can't right now.
its on the passenger side. The noises changes with the rev, gets faster and higher pitched. The idle is a little shaky. Idles high 1500 for the first minute. After being run the idle wants to dip low . The noise seems worse in idle. Still seems to run fine. I've read ac compressors can have a whirring noise, but the idle problems makes me think its a timing belt issue

For the light bulb issue, check your wiring as p11silverdub suggested and check your bulbs. I've seen a dual-filament bulb burn one filament out and arc it across to the other. This will cause a problem very similar to your taillight issue.
