Alex's (MAV1178) 1996 Infiniti G20 ![]() click image(s) to enlarge G20.net: How, when & why did you first acquire your Infiniti G20? mav1178: I actually had a ’92 P10 that I bought from a friend (who has owned it for over 12 years). Picked it up in March 2007, made a roadtrip out of getting the car, drove it back from Chicago to Los Angeles, only to have it totaled 3 months later. At that time my friend Marco at SR20Store had a ’96 touring, and I told him I’d buy the car if he ever sold it. 5 months later he sold the car to me… $1700 was an absolute STEAL. Probably the best $1700 I’ve ever spent. Until the transmission blew up a month after I got the car. Drove up to Mammoth Mountain, 3rd gear on the way up, 3rd gear on the way home. 650 miles driving 70MPH at 5000RPMs is NOT my idea of a good time. Oh, and the snow sucked that weekend too!! ![]() click image(s) to enlarge G20.net: What were your original plans for the car and have they changed? mav1178: The original plan was to keep it a simple daily driver. I was eventually going to convert to a 5 speed and swap the engine for the VE…. But things changed in December 2007 when the automatic transmission gave out on my way up to Mammoth Mountain during a snowboarding trip as mentioned above. This moved all my plans up by at least a year or more... During the same time, my friend Gary was talking about having different types of cars featured in Project Car Magazine, and I had told him I already bought the SR20VE and was already in the process of getting all the parts together to swap the motor. One thing led to another and we agreed to put the car in the magazine. Most of the swap and parts are documented in the magazine that came out in April 2009, issue #11. ![]() click image(s) to enlarge G20.net: What performance modifications have you made to your car? mav1178: Most of it was already covered in Project Car as previously mentioned, but the list consists of: ![]() click image(s) to enlarge
![]() click image(s) to enlarge G20.net: Do you have any dyno numbers? mav1178: The car put down 177.6HP/141.2TQ with the header/manifold spacers/ECU, and 186.1HP/142.2TQ with the N1 cams and JWT cam gears on a Dynojet 248C as featured in Project Car Magazine. ![]() click image(s) to enlarge G20.net: What suspension modifications have you made to the car? mav1178: List of suspension mods on the car currently include: click image(s) to enlarge
![]() click image(s) to enlarge G20.net: Any cosmetic modifications to the exterior? mav1178: Fiberglass hood (painted to match factory color), GT-R style grill sourced from another forum member, and eGT taillights. California vanity plates, too. Yakima roof rack w/ snowboard and bike attachments for the REALLY fun stuff. Snowboarding > cars **any** day!!! ![]() click image(s) to enlarge G20.net: How about the interior? mav1178: JDM Z32 shift knob is probably the only modification. However I do have a Bride Zeta III Type-L seat and Bride seat rails for track use… or if I feel the need to change out something in the car. Otherwise the interior is stock P10 touring, black/black leather. ![]() click image(s) to enlarge G20.net: Have you made any upgrades to the stock sound system? mav1178: Since I wanted something that I wouldn’t mind taking on long trips, I’ve upgraded the sound system quite a bit. A Pioneer in-dash flip-out DVD head unit was installed, as well as a custom amp rack was built under the rear deck in the trunk both to install the MTX amps, as well as maximize trunk space. A pair of 6.5” Boston Acoustics Pro speakers are mounted in the front doors, matched up with 5.25” BA rears. But for the most part, it looks stock. The head unit is the only giveaway. ![]() click image(s) to enlarge G20.net: Any future modifications we should look out for? mav1178: The list of mods can never end, but a few of the ones on-hand and/or on order include:
![]() click image(s) to enlarge G20.net: How and when did you first find G20.net? mav1178: I had organized an event in November 2003 called "Nissan Owner's Festival" at California Speedway, and was invited by Kyle to post the event on the site. I had known Kyle for years via the SE-R mailing list, but never really had time to go on all the forums and contribute. I "found" the site again in 2007 after I got my second G20... the first one was totalled when it was rear-ended by a lifted Xterra as mentioned previously. Been on the forums on a regular basis ever since. ![]() click image(s) to enlarge G20.net: How has this site benefited you? mav1178: For starters, there’s been useful information one can look up, just like every other forum. But because this is a niche market car, there’s not that much information available on the internet, so members are more inclined to give useful information. I come from a background of 12+ years of experience on forums and mailing lists (remember those days? The OG SE-R mailing list!!!), and having moderated forums and manually screen “tech” emails on a 240SX mailing list I know how forums and their members can make or break an entire site. Having said that, G20.net is well run, and at least participation on the site gives members old and new a feeling that they belong somewhere even though the rest of the automotive aftermarket industry has (basically) given up on the car. You have no idea how hard it was to source some parts for the car!!! ![]() click image(s) to enlarge G20.net: Any last comments you would like to make? mav1178: First off, I’d like to thank Kyle. Even though he’s no longer a “SE-R guy” (inside joke), it’s still good to keep in touch after all these years, and he bugs the crap out of me because of his suspension setup... Much mahalo to people that have supported the car via Project Car, every issue sold is validation that these types of projects are what people want to see. There’s no single individual to thank or mention, because honestly if you’ve been in this industry long enough, people completely unrelated to your current car/project have had an impact on you in the past. But I’d like to thank you for reading this whole thing, if you’ve read this far. I’d like to give a special shoutout to Darth Vader and the Death Star. http://twitter.com/darthvader and http://twitter.com/death_star hahahahhaah.
