Would you recommed putting seafoam in oil before oil change?

Hey guys, just wanted to know if any of you would recommend putting a can of seafoam in your engine oil to clear it out before an oil change. im thinking about doing that to my oil just to make sure theres no gunk in it or anything so when i do an oil change this weekend it'll be cleaned out. the car currently has 125xxx miles on it, and i got it at 109xxx miles and i dont know if it was ever taken care of or maintained. so here i am asking for your guys opinion.

thanks for all those who replies to this

I've done it with no ill effects. I would not put an entire can in however, also I would not recommend leaving it in for an extended period of time. I simply let it idle in the driveway for a few minutes.

I pour the rest of the bottle in through the intake manifold, by way of the brake booster hose.

The way that I have found to make it work best is 1/3 in the tank, 1/3 in the intake, 1/3 in the oil about 200 miles before an oil change.

Result = Perfect running engine with 185k miles.

oh really? i was told by the people at autozone to pour the whole thing and drive with it in for a week before changing it out. i was thinking putting in a can tonight and change saturday morning. but guess that might be a little extensive? i dunno...

You can do what you wish for the oil. I personally don't want anything but oil in the car while I'm beating the piss out of it. Not sure what it does to break down the deposits, but can't be too good on the lubrication effects of the oil. I know others have done it for longer periods of time.

As for putting it in the intake, there have been multiple threads as to how to apply. Search for seafoam and you will find a pretty detailed explanation.

honestly, don't trust the people at autozone. putting the whole can in might work for a bigger engine, that needs around 6-8 quarts of oil, but not for our cars that need only 3 1/2 qt of oil.

this is really the best place to look/ask a question first, before going to the peeps at a retail store.

Leave that seafoam in there for too long, and get ready to redo your valvecover gasket.

Only put 1/2 the can in the oil. Let it idle 10-15mins, then drain the oil. DO NOT drive the car under any circumstance once you add the seafoam to the oil. So, if you put you car on ramps to change the oil, then do that first. Add the other 1/2 can to a full tank of gas, or (do a search since it's been covered seveal times, and yes detailed howto's) use the seafoam to clean out the intake via a vacuum line.

I thought it was 3-5/8 qts oil...

Gnet>Autozone

Maybe those ppl meant to drive it if you only put it in the tank? Some ppl do run with it in the oil, but better safe than sorry.

Drive the car with seafoam in the oil? Where did you read that???? They're on crack! The seafoam will also breakdown the lubricating properties of the oil. So to drive the car with it in the oil, well you know where I'm going. It's ok to run the engine for a short time under no load/idle, and then drain it. If you want to avoid all the confusion, just go to seafoam's website.

That's what I do, except I don't drive it for 200 miles. More like 50 max. But either way, same thing. Good results everytime. No sludge when I popped that thing open.

I just make sure not to beat on it while driving with SF in the oil. Just light driving around town.
