How far should this carputer go? I'm curious to see what you think!

The image dynamics are subs btw.. just thought I'd mention them.. $85 for a 12 shipped with an id4 motor..
This is my opinion on the story... The ID rep I talked to said these were for a client... Look up the REsonant Engineering subs.. The cone has a large concave dustcap identical to the id subs being sold off on ebay right now... The motor appears identical.. there you have it, but you probably wont get them to admit it...

The bostons are nice btw

Thanks for the shoutout! I registered just to say that ;)
lol, you crazy, that's why i love ya

and matt, holy crap, i got a girl for you to meet over at mp3car.com. She was/is the USACi Intermediate Consumer World Champion and Best of Show (2005). You two would get along fine (platonically, she ain't single)
that's enough proof that you can design all you want, but once it's in the car it'll tell the real story...
Gotta love field testing! No, its true, from computers to sound systems, theory (design) only gets you so far. I'm inching to put the theory into practice. It's looking to be great, but...i'm just hoping "looks" and "is" are the same thing. Kappa perfects are crazy good in potential, but people in my area try to make Pioneers sound lke Solobarics. It's not gonna happen. I was aiming for a total budget of $800+/- 25% (yeah right on the minus). I pretty much hit it nicely. But you have to admit, kappa 3 way, Basslink, Alpine 3401, RF 4040dsm, Audiocontrol 3xs all for under $150 shipped, i can't really complain about the sound i get. I may pick up some kickers, cadences, REs, or ID's for the rears (so much for an all infinity system) as kappas/perfects are getting increasingly hard to find at a good price..well..my idea of a good price...$30-$50 Right now i'm thinking of getting this Kappa 60.5cs midbass since that's all i really need for the rears, though i was hoping for some tweets somewhere in there:p. Sometimes you have to stick in your budget.

If this wasn't my daily school/work/play/off road driver (if the celica had to do it, the G does too!) I'd get the huge system with 12's or 15 perfects or solobarics and play wiht my options a bit, but hehe, i think by the basslink you can see i'm space concious

One thing i'm curious about. I wanted to make a plexiglass seperation enclosure/ sound processing rack system for my system. Add some blue LEDs and give it a nice glow...yes, i like shiny things too

My Kappa 12 in a 1cu ft sealed is about the same size as that basslink.. it looks funny to be so loud for one woofer.. he he...

The 4 cubic foot box kept other stuff from sliding aroung, now I have to clean out my trunk...

50 more hits on the site since last night..

not single? we can change that.

Multimedia...finally

Not too many words oh this post, its time to show you a bit of the goodies in action!

To all those curious on what the nitemax can do, a friend, shotgunefx on MP3car, made this video. He had actually put powerful IR blasters in his fogs...which kinda flushed things out a bit, but that IS color you're seeing, not black and white. I'm probably going to try something less damaging to the eyes of the other otorists. If i can't blind people, he can't either! Enjoy:)

Image

Nitemax drive video

Barrel distortion is due to the wider angled lens

In other news, i bought the Gyration Ultra GT and the IBM Thinkpad Port Replicator II. I'm also going to pick up a PCMICA (PC card) TV tuner/video capture device. It will allow me to view and record nitemax input on screen and watch TV in the car as it comes with an antenna. Good deal!

@ matt, she's an "I got a ring" type not single;) Rides ducatis too. :smoke: . That's okay though, i think my girl is prettier and more hard core.

Im paying attention to this as is my cousin who is gonna pick up his G20 tom. When your done with this, id definitely love to see if its worth all the hype.

when i'm done wiht htis I'D love to see if it ws worth all the "hype"

I'm most likely picking up that TV tuner card todya or tomorrow. The guy emailed back, but he's in NY and that means shipping is more than it shoudl and i ahve to pay teaxes:p yeah, i'm annoying with that, but i've got limited funds. However, here's what's been field tested:

*POT= Proof of theory
*IT= In Testing
*TBD= To be Developed
*PFFFT= Passed Final Function Field Test

ShuttleXpress control (POT, PFFFT)- works great!
Remote desktop linking (one connected to one computer, then, establishing connection through another, in effect allowing you to control two computers from one device) (POT, PFFFT)

Remove Desktop on PPC (POT, IT)- still need to get an x50v and keep the sond on the host comptuer
Night Vision (IT, TBD)

Gesture based control (POT, IT)
Voice control (POT, TBD)
Wake-on-lan (TBD...looks interesting)
HUD (TBD)
AI Bot interface (POT, TBD)- its just too hard for me to do...maybe if i was better, i coulfd make more headway, but i'd still need kots of help and the technology isn;t fully there yet
In car TV (TBD)

Sounds like still alot to do, doesn't it, including fab.

Software development (installation and customization really) is the hardest part. I want it seamless, but until i can learn more C/C++, or get a friend to do it, i'm pretty much counting absolute integration out for now. What pisses me off is that i already nixed the Bot AI out of the development because the transnote couldn't render it that well, plus it was cool factor fluff, and now i have the Thinkpad R51 (which i was just offereed a 1gb upgrade in ram:))

Set up itself won't take more than a weekend, including stereo install, although dynamatting will be an issue. Also, i'll have to find the appropriate spot for the laptop and basslink.

Fabrication is a small issue. See, here's the thing...everythings' pretty much fabbed. The screen, x50 slot, ShuttleXpress, USB, nitemax and the HUD are the only things i'll need to fab really. USB and shuttle express are easy- they go in the cubby hole and above the parking brake. Screen and HUD can be solved buy building an external unit. Nitemax will be developed and build way before i put it in the car. Infact, the nitemax will probaly the first systme in the car as it can work independantly of all the others.

Probably i need to get these G parts

Driver's side door trim
Center console
Dash trim
Dashboard
Steering wheel

Before i put them in the car, each system will be properly tested

If i fail...which i pray i won't, esp on how easy it is to succeed, then i guess its alright and i'll have a massive sale. Like i stated before,

Crap...HUD brain storm.

Edit: I'm goign to start taking photos today. I have a busy day, so yeah...

wouldnt it be feasibly easy to integrate a micro atx board somewhere in the trunk and integrate a power supply and all that and sort of custom fab the rack and even have a cd/dvd+rw drive accessible from the trunk-- maybe under the seat, or somewhere cool, maybe the dash pocket under ac controls.. you could throw your ipod out the window and have a 200 gb pc for maybe half the money... As in you would only need a 1ghz box for playing mp3's and even friggin video games.. though a 1.5ghz would be nice to have when playing dvds.....

Just a thought, though I guess that's what your already doing..

I've always had that idea... a good 200gb hd would be plently of space for mp3's, at least at first. (he he he yeah) Then you could upgrade to a 1TB disk when you want to own an mp3 of every song known to man with a full compressed backup of each one...

hmmmmm..

Don't forget to shut down!!! Every single time you turn off your car..

BUT, engine management and pro-audio effects processor control would be easily integrated into your mobile pc.... ONE badass ride..

Maybe a second battery would be enough to keep the pc idling for a few hours so you wouldnt have to shut down all the time..

Maybe it wouldn't even need a second battery to keep from shutting down all the time......

u dont "need" to shut it down every time,,,put it into sleep/hibernation or sumtin & then have it wake up when the car is started....tehre are PS's out there that do this for u.....check out some of the mp3car.com fournms

I've never looked into the available technology out there for a mobile pc..

Are you saying they manufacture power supplies for mobile applications?

I understand the hibernation method.. That would be ideal..

that's why i'm insistant on using a laptop- its got a battery. I've clocked the R51 on a no LCD situation and it has a run time of 5h39mins. Hiberantion and standby are going to be key, as there's a chance that this thing will be shut down for a few days and driving is 40 mins only if i have class. One of the reasosn why i like IBM s they were one of the first PC to reliably come out of hibernation or standby. i have 0 forseeable issues where power in concerned. I was thinking, however, of power issues with the night vision, but seriously, i'll doubt i'll need it when i'm not driving, and if i do, i'd demand a 2 axis rotation,a dn i'm not entirely ready for that as there are orientation issues i don't want to deal with.

Matt, at many people actually build PCs out of pretty much anythign that's a computer, form SBC's (Single Board Computers usually used in servers) to PCs you'd find straight off a desk thethered to the car. I'm doing laptotp with a docking station because hey, why not? THere are many MANY places and things you can do, and its infinitely customizable to your liking. There are front ends taht you can use from the original OS supplied with yoru computer to front ends that windows will actually boot into replacing the boot exe file form explorer.exe to XXXapp.exe. Literally, iv'e been done with the basic computer for quite some time, could have had this in the car months ago, but i wanted to do it well cause i didnt' want to change it again. then ideas kept coming and they were cheap, feasible, and most importantly powerful and efficient. Whatever made ddriving safer, esp in a condition where switching tasks for me is dangerous, was a plus. Like this TV card. This all light camera of mine is going to be a pretty frequent occurance on the desktop as i WANT TO SEE EVERYTHING WHILE COMPUTING.

But amazing quality sound and navigation and dvds is the main reason why anyone does this. You can't beat a 24-96hz processing of dedicated hardware form cheap creative software, and incredible power. I mean, compared to a carputer, and EQX is a joke if the right software is developed. Power is clean, clarity is unmatched, and just needs to be amplified to yoru speakers and, with the same effort put into making the car sound prooof and rta, you got yoruself a crazy, butt kicking, World Champonship winning system (nto that simple, but it sure makes it easier to do on your FIRST try.

Engine management can be done easily ont he computer (erikbronx has that) but i'm not ready to drop $100-$150 on an OBD-I Nissan Consult. If i was going performance, which i will do if i get a nice new car ne day, then sure, bring it on. I even have a few ideas for designs for a outer body sectional damage control, that a friend, lostreciept/lostreception, is programming, that is reminicent of an acrade based space simulator. But that's too much money and effort invested in a car that i got for $450. Things like that don't get trasnfered as easy form car to car, and as you can see, most of the stuff i'm adding is pretty modular other than the driver controls.

hehe, and at your ideas...save some space for some of the best cinematic audio since IMAX. I've seen this in a limo, where they put a 42" screen plasma behind a two way mirror, so its "invisible" when its not on, and...let em tell you...that guys must have been rolling it in. A moving cinema off XP. In week, part time, i bet her paid of the tv, computer, insurance, and his month's mortgage

Well, my laptop batt is around 14v....... That means you could probably hook it directly to car power without inverting or anything.

I'd use a fuse too.. prob a good idea

Those lights aren't that bright, they're just brighter reflecting off the road than direct light from street lights thats all.

that's the problem...they're not supposed to be there at all! They're so bright, instead of illuminating, they're flooding out. I mean, its a great design, dont' get me wrong. Once he gets those IRs down, that thing is going to be stellar and i may ask him to build me a circuit.

I'm going to post up pics later on today of a few things.

Pictures!!!!!!

First, i invite you to look at this. Its me iming G20 member Randyo form my pocket PC. The only thin is that's not a pocket PC AIM window, is it? Nope, i did it doing remote destop. He didn't believe me...hence his comment that you can read below.

Image

edit: you cant' read it at that resolution...he said BS :naughty:
You can see why i want VGA now. 4 times the screen resolution, so i can fit the whole desktop on there.

Linking
Image

This is what i mean by the term "linking" On this screen, you can see three seperate desktops form three dirfferent comptuers being on. Its a bit harder to see, so use the Recycle Bins as land marks. This was done on the R51 and put on an external monitor as the R51's screen is cracked.

PLEASE CHECK THIS OUT!
It has a lot of interesting picuters i took this evening as a proof of concept. It disproved my concetp with the G, as the cowel need sto either be cut away to fit an LCD, or window might be best, but still, its great news fr the work we did. Check out the last images where i make my point. If you want to read the whole thread, there's a button on the top right that says "Vew Entire Thread"

Okay, now, on to the G shots...

I decided to go outside and arrange the layout seeing i have a new computer and a bolder new direction. of the three most major things in question, i found a spot for each one of them:). None are really optimal, in my mind, but its a spot. Each spot has been picked to ensure that everything attaches smoothly, it blocks nothing important, and is somewhat ergonomically correct, ie a comfortable reach and spot.

ShuttleXpress

Image

This was the HARDEST one to figure out a spot for, and you can see by where it's at, the best i could isnt' the best i'd like ti to be. Its at a comfortable position, a decent angle, and i won't have to look when i want to change or scroll, or select.

x50/x50v

Image

I had to hold it up because i've realized that i'll need a mount to get it where i want it. that's not even where i envisioned it, but tis good enough. I'm going to have to get a silicon clear case and a mount. I'll rin power to it as well. I'm looking for a good rear place to put it, but the ash tray between the seats seemed the best, as no one is smoking in my car, but short stops would quickly take its toll. Another place that i liked, but thought i'd get in trouble for, was right infront of the rear view mirror, though not blocking it. However, it looked too much like a flip down screen and it woudl be hard getting the power cable up there. besides, if i wanted it that high, i'd get LCD visors...which i might anyways.

ThinkPad R51
Image

The goods right between some goods. I was highly disappointed that it wouldnt' fit under the seat, but change is good somethings. This position is, surprisingly enough IDEAL. The power is going to be RIGHT under it, so i can easily get it powered, the laptop is in the open, and can be easily accessed for whatever, like powering it on until we build a wake on lan (WOL) PIC (a programmable chip). I've decided that, for security reasons, i'm going to build a sleeve for it in there out of something, like an old mesh shirt, in order to keep the laptop cool and some people non the wiser. It also means that i'm DEFINTIELY going to have to repair the screen as i'm now using the Targus USB 2.0 Unviersal adapter instead of the Port Replicator 2, which will now me used for home. Also, the position makes it ideal for putting the TV card in there as the antenna can be easily positioned on the trunk and be waterproofed. One second though...i may have to use an IBM product with a PC car slot in order to get this working right...gah...more designing. i'll see where i go with this...here's a better view of the space i have to work with

Image

In terms of the CCD placement, i'm still figuring that out., i'll order the remaining camera parts later on, when i have more cash (and i will).

the LCD will ofcourse go in the natural places you'd thing it would go in.

No more trunk shots though. Other than the fact that the only other thing going in there is the inverter and sbc, and there's no real change, and it was raining...i've found that some people get off on looking at my gorgeou's girl's rear end. Quit it.

It should fit sideways...

I wouldn't leave a laptop sitting on the rear deck for a few obvious reasons== sunlight and theft.. that back window will also be hard to find too... especially with the infiniti logo in it.. just a thought

Hehe, erikbronx said the same thing, but you gotta read what i said...orhsould have said but may have forgotten to include it. The laptop is going to be in a sleeve, completely covered. You need to knwo what your going after in order to go after it. I may cover that entire area of the rear deck and just find matching carpet. That IBM is my new baby, i'm not letting anything happen to it.

I Did It!!!!

Hot off the presses, straight from MP3car! First images of HUD, using Iguidance mapping software as a test. Special thanks to Lost Reception for his help and taking the pics.

:) my idea worked prefectly.

Here's the results. Lost Reception was there with me and showed me a thing or two about iguidance and provided the digi cams. When we meet up next, it will be with a 7" LCD;)

To show that it is easily seen

To show that you can see htrough the image

Mission accomplished.
... (it continues on, but i do't know if you guys care)
Biggest problem: double vision. Then we need to get a larger screen
