My '95 G20 a/t failed (slipping bad in 3rd & 4th) last friday. The car has 103K and the transmission fluid was changed regularly. It cost me $2100 to fix at my local infiniti dealer. This was after much haggling. The original price quoted was $3600 . That's almost as much as the car's worth!Did you know you can haggle with these guys? I didn't. The wife HAD to have an automatic...oh well!

Now it needs new CV joints. I think I'm gonna replace these myself :).

yup...

you can try to haggle an ANY dealer.. won't always work though...

..and the bottom line is that automatic trannies won't last as long as stick's... but even stick's have their breaking point where they have to be rebuilt... just the price of keeping a car past 100K

here...here...Im getting to the 93K mark on my odometer with my car (99') These are just the prices we all have to deal with. If your handy could have probably converted to a manual for that price. At least thats what I plan on anyway....

Other options are going to a transmissions specialist, you would probably get better rates.

CV joint replacement

What do you mean? Do you mean that it needs new CV boots and that you're going to replace those yourself? Or do you mean that the boots broke and have lost all of their greese causing the joints to run dry and create shiny areas? If it's the latter, that's quite an undertaking, especially with an AT. The boots aren't any picnic to get on either. It's not going to be like changing brake pads; it'll take some time...even for a veteran.

Re: CV joint replacement

At least one of the joints is trashed: ripped boot & tell tale popping noise.

Why is it so much more difficult with the auto tranny? I assumed it was the same as standard.

While I'm no veteran, I have rebuilt engines, suspensions, and changed transmissions, back when I was young, broke and had lots of time on my hands.

OK, good luck. I just remember having a half shaft replaced on my '92 G20 and all the "fun" that came with it. Do you plan to use an OEM half shaft or aftermarket?

whew!

all this talk on difficult G20 maintenance makes me glad I don't have to do any of my own g20 stuff! :cheeky:

..but if my tranny takes a crap before 110K, it'll probably be time to part out the car and get another G20 unless I find a used one for a reasonable price! ...I just don't want to go there!!!! ..the dealer only recommends a new one (not cheap)...and I've heard horror stories about rebuild ones that just are never the same... apparently very few people can do the job right... my co-worker has gone back to a supposed specialist 5 times with her rebuild tranny... (YIKES)... all the trips back are free under warranty BUT what a pain!!!:monster:

Had my tranny rebuilt. $1200 runs fine. I had a little surge between 1st and 2nd but it was Dirty MAF and stuff. My CAi made the whole problem go bye bye ...

In the event that my tranny ever gives out, would it be probable that I can take a tranny from a G20t so I can use the LSD? Has anyone tried anything like that before?

why?

I read someone else's post here that said they replaced the tranny with LSD... but I'm not gonna do the search...

..but what would LSD buy you on a G20? It's not really that fast a car to warrent needing it.. not like you can easily spin the wheels anyway... you can, but you have to work at it.... with the 5-speed anyway... other than in the wet, why would you need it on a g20?

Well, an LSD really really helps take turns at speed, and helps control the car *to my understanding of how it works*. Although it's a lot more critical in a RWD vehicle, there are still some FF cars, such as Civic Type R, Integra Type R, etc. that utilize an LSD. Hmm, Civic Type R and Integra Type R, top line FF cars....with an LSD. Must be important. And if my transmission goes and I have an opportunity to get an LSD in my car *cuz usually, LSDs are a few thousand dollars to put in...* then by all means, I'd go for it.

if i'm right, an LSD will make sure that both the drive wheels are turning at the exact same speed. i guess this would be good for pulling out of a slide while drifting down mt. akina....or something. but if im right, if handbraking is your thing, i guess it would be good to have an LSD on your side while countersteering.

i think i remember someone talking about how the NX2000 tranny (which is supposedly the same tranny with LSD and some shorter gears) would fit in the G20. if im not crazy, someone on the forum has already done this. i read it on his site i think.

LSD doesn't make the wheels turn at the same speed, but splits power between the wheels so that the inside wheel gives up power to the outside wheel; in english: it helps redistribute power in turns. Countersteering is a little less important in a front wheel drive vehicle, and it all comes down to the handbrake and left foot braking. In either case, the LSD is a big help either way.

The NX2000 thing...I've heard of it, but I'm interested in taking the LSD tranny from another G20, but if the NX2000 one is exactly the same thing, I guess that'd be okay too. *sigh* time to search
