hi all. i have a 2000 g20t with 163k. i have had the car for about 8 months, bought it from the family of a friend. the mother had given it to her 18yr old son to drive and he burns up a clutch. they replace the clutch and a couple months later he burns up another one. clutch replaced again, car taken from the kid, they decide to sell it. i buy it since i needed a fuel efficient dd, car runs and drives like new. about a week ago i pull off from a stop, shift into second and when i release the clutch it pops out of gear like i missed a shift. the car wont go into gear, move, nothing.

i get it towed to a friends shop who thinks it might be a broken shifter, linkage, etc. he puts it on a lift, everything under the car looks good, nothing broken. he manages to manually get it into a gear, lowers the car and gets in and fires it up. loud noise sounds like a cement mixer and the car does not move when he lets out the clutch. says something has failed in the transmission.

another thing that irks me is i just had it redone in a matte black about a week before the tranny failure.

original.

i am hearing 2-2.5k for a repair/rebuild or 1k plus shipping and install labor for a used transmission (it has a lsd). anyone have any ideas on a less costly repair? help! thanks!

1k for a used trans sounds reasonable to me. $800 for a 2000+lsd trans is cheap and the remaining 2-300 for labor is also cheap considering its probably a more than 4 shop hour job to replace a trans. honestly i would go with a used trans over a rebuild unless you REALLY trust the mechanic doing the rebuilding. trans issues in p11 are not very common so a used trans should be fine.

this.

Just make sure you get a LSD hydro trans from a 2000+. I've seen some guys selling them as low as $400-$500. Also keep an eye out on sr20-forum.com. When you get a working trans, I recommend using Amsoil GL4, I had a P10 and tried using other fluid before, which I think resulted in my 5th gear synchro burning out. Never had problems with Amsoil GL4.

please enlighten me as to what sr20 forum will offer. is there a transmission from a Nissan that will fit without modification?
im confused with your comments;

- shift into second and when i release the clutch it pops out of gear like i missed a shift.

this is gear "pop out" (tranny problem)

- the car wont go into gear, move, nothing.

this can be due to damaged clutch; 1 of the spring(s) in the clutch disk popped out. it prevents you from shifting to any gears when motor is running
car isn't moving anywhere right now. Might as well pull the tranny off and have a little look. During this time you will be able to inspect the rear mount, the shifter linkage, and old fluids. Of course can inspect the clutch assembly too. Never know, once you pull the old tranny off your issue may become clear as day.

I highly suggest you set your clutch pedal to factory height and free play when done too. Often people try to adjust this in order to get by on a clutch issue. This causes more harm than good.

If you do in fact need another transmission, there are other manual fwd sr20 based cars that can fill your need. Lots of people these days are going for 6 speed swaps, and are posting their working 5 speed hydro transmissions for sale on that site. More SR20 parts are available, and its a pretty good community overall. Looks like your car is the touring model, so make sure you get the 2000+ LSD transmission, it will bolt right up.

j-tek and rob have good points too, pull the trans off and check the clutch.
I have an '02 P11 LSD Trans for sale, btw

the car won't shift into gear if the motor is not running either, it moves as if there is no engagement at any time, just as if the clutch was depressed but it is not. the problem happened as I pulled off from a stop sign, shifted into second gear and when i let off the clutch it popped out of gear. car will run fine but depressing the clutch does nothing although there is a slight noise coming from the transmission.

removal of the transmission just to look is not really an option. I am not a mechanic, I don't have the tools or a garage. My buddy does but can only work on it at his shop during weekends and once torn apart the car could not stay there beyond Sunday afternoon so any repairs or swap would have to be done and completed during the time constraints or I would have to have it towed back to my house until the next time he is free on a weekend.

I appreciate everyone's help and if your expertise leads you to believe it is an issue with the clutch I will inform my buddy and we can look at replacing it but if it is most likely a transmission issue the car will have to sit a while due to budget issues (work has moved me from full time hours to part time)

Thanks!

buy a couple a tools and put on your big boy pants. Your other option is what? To put $2,500+ into a $2k car? Might as well sell it as is busted and buy another car. There are plenty of nice G's for sale right now on this forum that you can get for less than you are going to end up spending on this one to get it back on the road if you pay someone else for everything.

I had very little car knowledge, still do. But one day my car wouldn't shift into gear. It broke coming down my street. I coasted it into my driveway (NO GARAGE) and within 2 hours I had the tranny off. If this is a clutch issue you will end up spending $200. If it is a tranny issue you end up spending about $800. If you pay someone else to diagnose and fix this it's thousands. This is a no brainer to me.
could it be that the TB came off and its not allowing it to go into gear? i had a similar issue but it was the clutch. when i took off the tranny pieces of the clutch came falling out.

Similar to my situation. When I took off my tranny the TOB was smashed and cracked, the clips were in tiny pieces everywhere and a spring was loose in the friction plate. Like I said earlier if he drops the trans his issue might become clear as day.

yeah...
Cant really be TO bearing by your story. Either clutch itself, trans breakage, or axle issue.

This is great advice. I was in a similar position about 6 years ago, but our cars are great to learn on. Very simple. Also, maybe see if there are any locals can help?
Could very well just be the Throwout bearing took a dumper.

How can TO bearing affect it if engine is off like he said?

Ive seen the ball pivot for the release bearing fork break off... does the clutch pedal feel ok? or abnormally stiff?
