HOW TO: wire a ve distributor into a de harness!!

no more needing to modify the distributor when swapping in a ve! just use this pin guide and you will be using the VE distributor on the DE harness!!

MAJOR NOTE!!: the vvl distributor has the resistor built into the distributor where as the p10 and p11 have it in the harness. if you have already wired it up and have issues with a check engine code (p1320), cut the resistor out and connect the green and yellow wires coming out of it so the resistor is removed. (sorry i forgot all about that part initially)

pin1-------(black) cmps------------------pin6--------------pin1 CMPS ground
pin2-------(orange) cmps-----------------pin5--------------pin2 CMPS +12v (small red-n-white wire)
pin3-------(blue) cmps-----------------pin3--------------pin4 CMPS Reference
pin4-------(yellow) cmps-------------------pin4--------------pin3 CMPS Position
pin5-------(yellow/red) resistor*----------pin8--------------pin7 Ignition check (coil -)
pin6-------(black/red) coil-----------------pin7--------------pin8 Coil +12v (large red-n-white wire)
pin7-------(black) transistor---------------pin2--------------pin5 Ground
pin8-------(white) transistor--------------pin1--------------pin6 Ignition signal


*because of how the distributor is designed (see major note) the resistor will need to be bypassed. connect the yellow/red wire for the stock resistor (from the harness side) to pin 5 on the vvl distributor.

EDIT!!: changed the highport, camshaft reference and position wires around. got myself a highport distributor and realized i had the wrong wires on the list.

Now I want to convert this to highport wiring so I can get rid of my external coil.

if you have a digram of the highport ecu pin out, i'll see if i can figure out the conversion for you. the fsm for the highport doesn't have the wires for the cam sensor labeled well.

Okay, looking at the wiring diagram in the 92 FSM, it has a crank angle sensor. AFAIK the OBDI SR20 doesn't actually have a crank angle sensor -- it just has the cam angle sensor, which I think it uses for both. So my guess is that's pin 1-4. What are the colors on the VE distributor and/or the P10 lowport distributor?

It then gets complicated, because there are three interconnected devices on the highport -- the "power transistor," the "resistor and condenser," and the coil. All three have connections to the ECU, too. Here are the wires for those three devices:

  • White wire from ECU pin 1 to power transistor
  • Yellow/red wire from ECU pin 3 to resistor and condenser
  • Black/red wire from ECU pin 36 to coil and resistor and condenser
  • Green/yellow wire between coil, resistor and condenser, and power transistor
  • Black ground wires from power transistor and resistor and condenser (but not from coil)

Halp? I can tell you that all this circuitry is built into the distributor on the lowport and the VE, but I can't tell you how it receives signals/power...

Actually, I don't have the cam position sensor wires yet. That's easy and I'll do it later. (Can you still send along wire colors?) But I do have the others:

Pin 5: yellow/red wire to resistor and condenser. If this is hard to reach, pull from ECU pin 3.
Pin 6: blue/red to ignition coil. Be careful -- this is high-amp power.
Pin 7: black to power transistor.
Pin 8: white to power transistor.

yeah the cam sensor wires are the only ones that aren't labled on the diagram. i just need to know which ones are +12v for cmps, cam reference, cam angle, and ground. i think though the highport fsm calls it different. i'm looking right now at what the wire colors are.

ok i updated the how-to with some info for the highport harness (pita to try and wrap my brain around how it's wired inside vs. highport wiring)

much thanks to thefultonhow for helping with the harness wiring. however the highport part has not been tested yet. use at your own risk (worst that'll happen is the vvl distributor will break)

yeah. I think this setup is better than the old style setup...I actually started to convert my 92 harness into a 94+ distributor setup as well... I'd probably clean up this thread, and or make a How-To and put it in the Sponsor section
Is this the reisistor youre talking about?

I have wierd no 1-7wiers on the VE distrubitor now, only have nr 8 left. But I have taken of this thing on the photo (witch was conected to 3 wiers), and one of them where grounded, this wiers i conected to con. 7 on the distrubitor.

Is this "box" an resistor and transistor combined?

No, that's just the power transistor. The resistor is back behind the engine, probably taped into the harness if I'm remembering correctly from my swap. I didn't bother to splice into it back there -- I just ran a wire to the cabin and spliced into the appropriate wire on the ECU.
Ah;) but the transistor is going in on pin 7 and 8 on the distrubitor?
I got a bit confused about the diagram up there, but I figured the numbering is refering to the connector wieved from the wire end, and the upper row is 1-4, and the lower row is 5-8. And the writing on the right is what to connect to the pins (on the VE dist.) And the pins on the P10 lowport is like this: 1&2 is two wires from the connector for the the transistor. 3, 4, 5 & 6 is te connector for the actual ditrubitor (on the De) and 7 & 8 is the connector for the coil.

But I have no spark on te sparkplug:p But ocourse, my resistor is til in the harness, so I wil ahve to cut that out. But what do I do with the two wiers from the transistor that are not grounded? I have found one of them going in to the ECU pin 1. And the resistor is on pin 3 i believe. And there is the wier going to pin 8 on the VE ditrubitor, transistor ignition signal, is this the one coming from the ECU?

I have to say, I realy apriciate the help I'm getting from you guys!!:D
get pictures of all the parts you have (the de distributor, transistor module, and ve distributor)
You don't have to cut out the resistor. Have you followed the instructions in my post #8 in this thread)? There are black and white wires going to the transistor; both of these need to hook up to the distributor.
