P10 Manual Oil Leaks

Hey all, I’m the new owner of a manual 1995 G20T and I’m excited. Love driving the car. It appears to be very well taken care of.

The only thing I’ve noticed so far is some major oil leaking on the bottom of the car. Mainly around the oil pan and the transmission. There was a lot of grime all around the bottom. The top of the engine is very clean. I pressure washed most of I can see better now. It’s very clearly leaking both engine and gear oil. I can touch the transmission and it has a noticeably unique smell, texture, color from the engine oil. I ordered a new oil pan gasket because I can see no damage to the oil pan. It looks like RTV was used last to seal it but I’m guessing that seal is worn/old. Hopefully the leaking ends there with the gasket change…

Now to the reason I’m posting, how the hell do I tell where the gear oil is leaking from exactly? Is there a list of transmission seals and gaskets that I can look to? Trying to figure out which parts I need to order. I think I’m finding it right along the seams of the transmission housing. But what are the gaskets or seals called? I’m about to pull the transmission to help me better assess what is going on. Thought of hiring a shop but I imagine the cost is north of $1500 to seal up the transmission. So I’m going in myself. This will be the biggest thing I’ve done on a car so, wish me luck.

The pictures are hopefully clear, but show before and after I cleaned the transmission.

After cleaning and a drive you can slightly see some oil leading to the bottom edge/lip of the bell housing.

so it looks like its only engine oil that leaking because the transmission fluid should have a red color. By the looks of the pictures you've posted... im confident that your rear main seal is leaking. This would require you to take the transmission, clutch and flywheel off in order to replace. It's not crazy difficult todo but its tedious and intimidating. (especially if this is the first time doing anything big) . here is the part number 12279-AD205 Rear main seal, SR20 engine

I thought automatic trans fluid was red? From the sound of the forums, the manual trans is either clear or green? This oil is clear. When I touch the leaked oil on the engine oil pan, it’s amber/yellow. This fluid, dripping from the transmission housing, is almost like a dirty, clear silicone lube that smells sulfur-ish.

Is there a seal on the opposite side of the rear main seal, bell housing side that seals off gear oil? I guess either way I gotta pull the thing apart :/
oops you are right. i guess im used to using Redline MT90 (which is red) but i'd assume most other off the shelf stuff is clear/amber.

this is what the inside looks like. there really isnt anywhere from inside the transmission to leak fluid unless something is really really wrong. The axle seal towards the left in this pic could totally leak oil but you'd see it being flung everywhere. I think you might see a difference in the oil coming from the bottom since its probably picking up all the clutch dust and being mixed with the engine oil.

you know what, I just jacked up the car and am getting ready to pull the transmission and I think you might be right about it being the rear main seal… and I think I got confused with another droplet I found the other day that was how I described. Well shoot. This thing is probably leaking all over the place… Also good to know about the color of MT-90. I’m assuming that’s not what’s in here. I have some on order because I checked the filler hole and put my finger in and felt nothing… couldn’t reach in far tho. Going to drain it here soon after a quick run to the hardware store. Thanks for the input.
Oil pans for SR are sealed with RTV. There is no pan gasket for lower or upper pans on any SR engine.

It looks like the right shape… guess we’ll see when I put it on… unless you recommend RTV?

Everyone uses just rtv and no gasket. Those always seem to leak no matter what.

Oh. Guess I better get some RTV instead then. What brand do you recommend?

After looking at all the gunk I’m really not certain if this is even the oil pan… or maybe it’s years of other leaks that have been fixed but never cleaned off… I’m not sure. There’s no fresh oil leaks, so wherever it’s coming from must only be leaking when the engine is going?

That's a cork gasket and will split and leak. From the factory they do not use gaskets. They use gray RTV.

It's possible the crankshaft oil seal is leaking or the timing cover is leaking from dried/disturbed RTV sealant. When the SR engines get up there in age the RTV starts to break down/deteriorate and seep. Usually the timing cover will start to seep in the upper corners where it meets the head and block.

Best thing to do is to clean it off the best you can and recheck for leaks in a few weeks of driving.
Alrighty. Ordered some RTV, Ultra Black Permatex. Hope that’s good. And going to pick up a rear main seal tomorrow. Hopefully I can get that replaced tomorrow, reseal the oil pan, clean off around the belts. Then get back out on the road, until I discover where any other leaks may be. Thank you for helping me out!
Wait I thought it was called oil recycling? Mine have always leaked back to Mother Earth and I then get oil from the earth, run it for a few weeks then it goes back home.
The only engine I’ve had that didn’t leak was my VE and it’s got that rod knack. I’m sticking to my oil recycling program and I just don’t park anywhere nice.
good on you for fixing it though.
