What purpose does the exhaust heat shield located under the car (before/after flex and just before the cat) serve? Mine is rusted to shit and rattling when I'm not on the gas. I jacked the car up and it looks to be partly held together with metal clamps, which are rusted and broken as well.

I started to rip off parts of the shield, then realized I should probably find out if it serves any purpose.
