Smart Entrance Control Unit swap?

I have a 2001 built 07-00 and requires a Model/ remote. I have been trying to find one without any luck. I got to wondering if I could simply swap the Smart Entry Control Unit with one from a later model (Built after 11-00)? I am thinking that I could then use a readily available Model/A remote. Has anybody tried this? Would the unit be a direct fit?
