Not sure why you want to put a fuse in that main starter wire, but if so, consider a circuit breaker instead. That way in the winter when it blows 5 times while trying to start it you just have to reset it
Well depending on how you routed the wire and what it is covered with should help give you an idea. If the insulation is against any sharp edges or anything it could run through then yeah I would. In that case for sure get a circuit breaker and not a fuse. Breaker of say 300a may be $100-150 but if you blow a fuse and have to fix and find out why you may go through a lot more $$ in fuses.
