Just recently, whenever I drive over a manhole cover, or any bump in the road, my steering wheel shakes for second. It doesn't do it while driving on smooth road and any speed, so I don't think tire balance is any part of it.

Any ideas what may be causing this? If you have any specific questions that may help in your response, feel free to ask.

Could be your alignment? Usually when it's starting to go, there's additional 'play' in the steering. Best way to check is to start the car and just turn the steering wheel left to right, if you feel any loose 'play' before the steering actually kicks in....probably time for alignment....or ball joints
