ok so a friend of mine has a 96 vw golf that failed emissions due to some petty obdII codes. i'm almost 100% positive that its due to a shredded vaccum lines that are both causing the evap canister to malfunction and causing it to run lean by sucking in unmetered air. now even if i patch it up and verify that the codes are gone, dont mean shit to the state of new jersey because i'm not an ERF (emissions repair facility) so i cant sign off on it...anyone in nj know a way around this, or a nice mechanic who can help with the technicalities?

according to the form, it has to be done by an ERF or they wont accept it as valid. i dont blame nj for making vw's shitty.. but anyone could have a busted hose causing a leak, throwing an obd2 code in the process. the shitty part is that you cant just fix it yourself and take it back for reinspection. now if thats not 100% accurate please let me know. it would be a whole hell of a lot easier to just replace the hose and take it back for reinspection, without paying a mechanic to say, yep its the hose.

they werent able to tell you the code it was throwing at emissions?

take it to autozone, check the codes for free... fix the problem, and take it back.

it wouldnt be legal to require you to see a mechanic, especially if you have to pay. if they absolutly require it, then its free. here in az if you have a big ol' freakin problem, and no $$$ there are welfare type routes to take and get a free fix.

im not sure about that.. i just reinspected my old car,it failed.. kept throwing a code, some shit in the engine.. so i drove a few miles out. i disconnected the battery ate at mcdonalds to give it time to reset the ecu, and then drove it back to get inspected before it triped again.. when they asked what i did.. i said i fixed it at home, and there was a check box for Self-repair and you just have to sign it saying that you did self repair.. i got passed thru and it worked! check engine light came on later that day.. but still i got passed! =D

god damn Mark. I did the same when I had a bad o2 sensor. Reset the ECU and take it straight for a smog check. Passed and the CEL came back a few miles later ;)

Sometimes when you reset the ECU. The codes will not pick up after a while.

according to: http://mvcf.state.nj.us/erf.jsp

An emission repair facility (ERF) is a privately-owned facility that is certified to repair emission-related failures. Only certified ERFs can perform such repairs unless you do your own.
note the end: "unless you do your own". The way I read that is either you do it yourself OR if you must take it a mechanic they must be an ERF

yeah, the form shows the reasons for failure and codes, evap canister malfunction and running lean. the evap canister has a hose coming off it going to the intake manifold thats butchered in one spot and has a t in it with no hose attached, which i'm guessing is causing the failure and taking in unmetered air, causing it to run lean. i just wanna change the hose, check to make sure the codes are gone, and then take it back *without* having to go to an erf. i'll look at the form again, but i'm almost + it said something about not being acceptable if not done by an erf. i'm glad we dont have to deal with this in florida anymore, although usually a failiure consisted of slipping a 20 to the nice man at the station.
