hey guys im a newbie but id like ur opinion on something..... im looking at getting a 99-01 g20 or a 97-99 mercury tracer.... imho theyre both pretty comparable cars but id like ur opinion on which 1 to get and a convincing reason why. thx guyz lata ~1~

note the title of this forum.

i would have to say G20 all the way, for the obvious reasons. i'll be honest that i dunno much about the tracer but i can tell you why to buy a G.

Sr20 engine

great handling

luxury without the luxury price

and it is unique.

im workin on buying my second one already. i dont think i would drive any thing else but the G.

Escort:Tracer IS NOT the same as Sentra:G20.

The uninformed and uneducated will always claim that the G20 is just a Sentra with a luxury nameplate. They share the same engine and some engine mods, but the cars ARE NOT the same. In fact, in Europe the Nissan Primera(the G20's name outside of North America) has been ranked as one of the best handling front-drivers. If you do a little more research, you'll see what I mean:
www.se-r.net

That weblink has info on the G20, the Sentra and other SR20-powered vehicles.

I won't waste time in telling that the G20 is "better" than the Escort/Tracer, but if you look at some reliability reports you'll see that the G20 ranks higher than most other cars across the board.:nerd:

i diny mean to say that the g is te same as the sentra just that they have that kind of relationship that the escort tracer do u no?

It's okay, most people know about Nissan and Infiniti will say G20 is another luxurious Sentra. But now you know it's not ;)

I'd say get the G20 because it's

To add to it, girls dig the G's ;P

Here should be reason #1 right here:

That Mercury engine has a TIMING BELT, it needs to be replaced at 100,000 miles, which will cost $1,000. This is not 'what if' maintenance, this is REQUIRED. The G20's engine has a Timing Chain, and requires no replacement.

All of the above. Need I say more?

Tracer: Escort as G20: Primera.
good one

my friend has a tracer like the one mentioned and it is not at all comparable to my g20 which is a 95. It has power windows and locks and gets good gas mileage, but besides that it is not that cool. its not sporty, isn't luxury, has no visual appeal to it whatsoever, and has no future for modifications.

the mercury (ford engine) life expectancy is like 125-150k. The G20 will at least do 200k without many problems. And the timing chain is such a nice feeling to know that the belt isn't about to break. Fords also have a lot of electrical ghosts, I speak from experience. My office mates escort is going through them at 100k miles. random radio turn ons, battery goes dead randomly, car doesn't always turn on or off, shuts down on her on the highway etc. And this is biased, but the G is such a much more gorgeous body style.

Where have you seen $1000 for a timing belt replacement? The dealer? That's even a ripoff from a dealer. The factory recommends the belt be replaced at 120k, but everyone knows they last longer than that anyway.

My moms Quest says at 105,000 miles, and Grubbs quoted her $975. For big stuff like that, I don't trust the mom and pop shops, and would rather take it to a dealer.

BTW: Let's keep this thread on topic.

My brother has one, its GARBAGE! The tracer its a POS, his tranny just took a shit too at 70k miles. The car handles like crap, rides uncomfortably (feel every bump), has terrible road noise, seats are uncomfortable and with time DIG IN, small interior space, no resale value and no pimp factor. The reliability on those cars are horrible, my bro still has a pretty bad idle problem. If you want to compare cars, compare it to a 97 Sentra or so, comparing the G20 would be more (to say the least) a Ford Countour which is also a POS.

Im not being biased on this at all if thats what you are thinking, my family is a FORD family, I have 5 family members with Ford's and they are all crap to me, the cars are basically falling apart on us, the only one that has done fairly well is the Explorer Eddie Bauer because its female driven and cared for by a man.

Drive both cars and then YOU decide.

NO COMPARISON!

All of the above!

almost everything you can even think of will beat the Mercury to the ground! Not to mention I think the only thing you can even do to that car is just a K&N filter..... theres no aftermarket parts for that car = no fun :( = slow :*( = no different than the car my grandmother drives

I don't even think those come in standard! = your going to be stuck with an auto.... :dead:

My brother has the K&N, the MAF is HUGE!!! You cant really change it out, and they do come standard. The only comparison you can make with that car is the 2.0l engine which is a lot SLOWER than the G20.
