Are p10 front speakers amped?

My first post. What's up guys. I've actually been lurking around this forum for a very long time. I just couldn't find a "good enough" p10 for me to buy it until recently. I've recently acquired a black 91 p10 with only 77k on it (auto though :( ).

Anyways, I called crutchfield to speak with them about the scosche adapter that the website says is needed to install a cd player in my 91 g20. The customer service rep told me that only the rear speakers are amped through an external amp and that the front speakers are amped through the hu. I thought this was incorrect but did not argue with him b/c I figured he knew what he was talking about. But, I thought I'd ask you guys. I have no intention of using the rear speakers. In fact, when I get my sub installed, I'm gonna take out the rear 6 1/2's so the subs will sound better/louder. I just want to put new speakers in the doors.

My question, is this scosche adapter necessary if I'm only going to use front speakers (and aftermarkets fronts at that)? Thanks in advance.

dont listen to anything crutchfield has to say. they probably told you the wrong size speaker too. the only thing you need to install a stereo is the plugs that go into the stock harness and come out as just colored wires. my g came w/ an aftermarket stereo though, so i may be wrong. the front speakers are 4x6's and they are amped. there are 2 amps in the back, 2 channel's. one for front, one for rear. tell the crutchfield people they're wrong, maybe they'll change it.

Well you're gonna need the Scosche unless you plan on wiring around your stock amps (which is what most people do). I didn't want to do the rewire so I just picked up a Scosche at Wal-Mart for like $10, messed with the levels for a few seconds and it works fine. Mitch's car was probably rewired at some point to bypass the amps, or there's a line level adapter in there hidden somewhere.

However, I'm not sure if it's as necessary in your case, since you're not gonna have rears. I've only ever had experience with (or heard of, for that matter) problems with the rears blowing from being double-amplified through both the aftermarket hu and the stock amps. But I'm thinking for longevity's sake, you're gonna want to do something or your fronts will eventually blow too due to double-amp. Then again, I could be wrong about that, since I've heard three different things on here: 1.)one amp powers fronts, one powers rears. 2.)one amp powers lefts, one powers rights. 3.)both power rears, hu powers fronts.

Basically, I can offer you no help whatsoever. Sorry I even posted. :dead:

IF you are to install aftermarket front speakers and an aftermarket cd player and not use the rear speakers then you do not need the 49.99 thing or whatever it is on crutchfields site. You can get the same thing for 25 bucks at wal-mart anyways. Line level converter is 17.77 and the harness adapter is like 6 bucks.

You will need to re-wire your car or by pass the amps. There are writeups or how tos for those somewhere I think. I think in the audio faq, not sure though. Let us know what you go with.

I recently used the scosche stuff to install an eclipse cd3434 in my G to be able to play CDs without worrying about every tiny bump on the road surface causing skips. The stock 10cd cd-changer is messed up on my car and it's all but unplugged now :D

i cut all the wires from my amps and just bypassed them. there is one amp for front and one for rear. my rears blew because they were double amped for so long and i didnt know about it. my fronts are fine tho, i guess the amp wasnt so high on the fronts or something, i dunno...

actually if yours is a 91' it came with the factory tape deck that only powered the front 4x6's, there is a 50watt clarion amp in the side of the trunk near the power antenna. If you are getting an aftermarket headunit i would suggest replacing all speakers. And if you do you will have to have them bypass the rear amp or you will end up with uneven power to the rears therefore they will be to loud and over power the smaller front speakers. Trust me. Had to go back to the shop a few times to make them do it right!

P.S. I have everything alpine and it sounds awesome!!

the 91 only has one amp in it(for the back speakers) the other amp is in the stock head unit, so if you go with an aftermarket one your front speakers will be starved for power and distort. so get an amp and use that for the fronts.

Awesome, thanks for the replies guys. So, I am for sure only going to put speakers in the front and just unhook the rears (and eventually take out the rear speakers so my sub will be louder). So, I should buy the scosche at walmart. But, should I just unhook the rears at the speaker terminals or should I unhook some other wires (ie before the stock amp or.....)?

noooooooooo!!!! for goodness sakes man pleasssssssssseeeeeeeee don't go to walmart. i beg you, they have the shitiest stuff there. go to car toys or a specalty(sp?) shop to get your goods, trust me they will last a lot longer and perform tons better. Stinger is my brand of choice. don't go with scosche.

p10 front speaker amp

1994 G20T stock CD HU

my front left speaker cuts in and out...mostly out [no sound] or barely any sound, the right front speaker works fine, both rear speakers work fine.

Could the amp be bad even though the front right speaker works? I know the speaker is not bad because the speaker works from time to time, i have taken out the door panels and have checked the wiring to the speaker and it is ok.

BTW I have 2 amps under the rear deck in the trunk

thanks,
Emond
