Knock Sensor replacement FTL!

So my friend's car had the CEL for the knock sensor. We got the car jacked up, tried to undo the bolt for the knock sensor without removing the starter but couldn't get enough leverage. So we decide to remove the starter.

Got the knock sensor out in about 5 seconds and bolted everything back up. Turn the key to start the car and..........

NOTHING. The car won't turn over. So we push start the sucker and it starts right up. Turn it off and try again..NOTHING. So we swapped the starter and BAM! it starts right up. Now this really puzzles me because the original starter worked perfectly well up to the minute we removed it to get the knock sensor out. The starter doesn't look like any wires broke off or anything. So what could be an explaination for why it just gave out like that?

dont have an explaination for ya it seems sometimes that just happens. i was changing out the exhaust on my bus a few weeks ago and same thing, i hit it with a hammer and its back to normal.

By the time we installed the second starter, it was almost 2:30am. But, after the car didn't start with the original starter, I assumed the gears didn't line up properly and removed it, inspected the starter and then put it back in. It still didn't start.

I didn't do anything special when I put the second starter in so I don't think install error had much to do with it.

[Im not offended at all by the user install comment lol] We even tried to tap the starter and still nothing. Guess it's just one of those things?

A better idea would be to secure the starter in question to the bench with a vice or c-clamp and such. Connect the "-" terminal to ground and run a 12V source to the "+". A quick connect/disconnect should suffice (don't wanna kill the 12V source :)). That's what we did in auto shop to test starters after we rebuilt them.

with lawn moewr starter i hooked it to a part of the frame with vise grips, and then ran the battery to it, and that is an easy test.

btw i have also fixed a nonworking starter with electronics cleaning spray, open it up, spray it real good, let it dry, put it all back together, and voila!
