Weird overheating problem

When I'm on the interstate, I usually just put my car on 75mph cruise control. Whenever the car goes uphills (I live in VT, our interstates go through the mountains), the temp needle goes up to about 3/4. Normally it's just below half. That's the only time that the needle goes up...around town it's fine. What I did figure out was that when the needle states going up, if I put the heater on full blast the temperature goes down right away. I'm thinking that I need to change the coolant and change the thermostat. Good idea?

Every time i have needed to change a thermostat it was because of low temps to long. (stuck open) except my G ( just replaced with oem for no reason) if you want a oem one with 100k i could send ya my old one. worth a try.pm me a address.

I don't think it's the tstat. As stated above they usually get stuck open which would cause your car to run cold. It's a cheap part so I say change it and put fresh fluid in. Might as well rule those out.

Make sure your fans are coming on too. Make sure your coolant temp sensor is working and clean. One day I noticed mine was covered in oil from doing oil changes. It didn't seem to cause any problems but I'm sure it wasn't a good thing.
